So the college are after suspending the Legion of Mary soc for some pretty...interesting things. Anti-gay posters being put up, etc. It's after making RTÉ news and the Journal.

It's a bit mad that they thought they'd get away with publishing something so blatently homophobic and just generally horrible. An anonymous committee member is quoted as saying that the "content on the document had been taken direcly from a website. It was not aimed at attacking any person or group of people and was not intended to hurt or offend."

The fact that this is after making national media is a bit worrying.

What the hell did they expect to do with it?

I'd look at it the opposite way actually. Everyone realises that some people follow their religious beliefs to the core. So we can expect something like this to happen every now and again. However, the fact the University dealt with it so swiftly gives us a good image both nationally and internationally as we deal with stuff like this quickly, making people more eager to come here as they know the University has their backs.

Sad thing is they probably believe it themselves. Personally I'm glad they got to air their bigoted little views for a short while, might cop a couple of them on.

Could have them done for plagiarism there.

Why is there even a need for a religious soc? Don't religious people already have places they can congregate and so on

It's about meeting like minded people in a less formal setting.

I understand the need for allowing religious societies, but I have issue with the provisional status of the Legion of Mary being granted given that there was already a Christian Union Society".

I've heard that CU is more protestant and LoM was meant to be a Catholic thing. I really don't think both should be funded. Stop fighting over the stupid small differences and focus on the big stupid similarities IMO. The Socs office isn't about to fund a Shi'ite and Sunni Muslim societies nor the plethora of other Christian/etc denominations.

Orangised religions have enough of their own funds to host these things in their own time, the college shouldn't be giving them the time and space.

It seems to have sparked a bit of an interesting debate over freedom of speech for such groups.

Yes I would be against funding for religious societies, the same with political party societies.
