    Hi,

Im a mature student in UL finishing my engineering degree, my course contains a coop placement from the end of 2nd yr until january of the following year. As a mature student with work experience I was exempt from this, and was told by my welfare office to sign off BTEA as normal for the summer and then sign on to it again in january. A few days ago I called about it to clarify the situation for January, and I was point blank told no one would have advised me to do so and that I would have to reapply for the BTEA before I go back but that there would be no guarantee that I would get it.

So I'm basically in a situation of having to possible drop out of my degree after jumping through every hoop thrown at me to get back in.

Has anyone else experienced something similar?

    No

But I think if social welfare won't reinstate BTEA then you should complain to the Ombusman

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Thanks mango salsa, I found a phone number on a thread here somewhere for the main office in carrick I think( after the social in limerick told me there was no one only them I could speak to about it), the ladies in the main office have being very helpful and a bit confused as to why I would have any problems and are looking into it.

Worth mentioning for any mature students going back to a course that has a placement involved. I found out last week that it was possible to hold onto your btea during any placement along with any pay you may receive from the employer because you maintain student status while on the placement. Hope it helps someone out, I myself have learned how hard it is to get this information
