    Hi guys.

When I bought the house around '04, we were told that 0#4 sets the alarm and the code turns it off. That's been fine up until last weekend, when it wouldn't set as it's telling me an area is active. It's not a PIR area, and I can't establish where it is. I have no manuals and no zone list. Any ideas?

So when you goto set the alarm (0#4) it save open zone and then just zone 1,2 etc.
    No descriptions programmed? Typical!
    What is the zone number?
On a standard house with 6 zones, zone 5 or 6 may be a panic button pressed down.
After that its open each window or door one by one & start identifying your zones. A job the installer should have done.
You could also try opening the panel lid. Some lads write the zone names inside. You might be lucky.

    Thanks.

It's saying Z4 - Bat Kit Util. Which is strange as there's no PIR's in those rooms and all windows and doors are locked.

Its a faulty sensor on one of those windows or doors.
The correct way to diagnose this is to check the resistance on that zone .

The names are set up so. If you enter 0#3 on the keypad this will put the system in user walk test. Have some one at the keypad and bang these windows, doors. The zone and name will be indicated on the keypad. Also if the zone is showing open it may just close from banging the sensor. If this happens its more than likely the faulty device.

Only testing with a multimeter will find a faulty or faulty devices on a system.

Remove the resistor from the last device on the zone and connect the wires to the last device.
Sometimes the resistor is in the control panel so just remove this and connect the cable ends from that zone to the multimeter.
Set the meter to 200 Ohms and take a note of the reading.
Each device you have on that zone you will need to tap 10-20 times plus open and close each contact one by one. If you do connect the meter in series with the last device then make sure you disconnect the zone in the control panel plus any resistors on the loop and join the cable together there.
After each one, check if the reading has changed.
If it does not return to in or around the same value remove that device, join the cables from the alarm circuit together and move on to the next device.
After this you should have a circuit with a lower resistance value that remains the same after you tap or open any device.
Replace any faulty devices plus replace the EOL resistor and rewire the zone back into the panel.
