2008 Merc CLS vs Jaguar XF

Looking at buying on of these in January. What are peoples recommendations? Have petrol paid for through work so luckily that's not an issue given the engines. Have to pay tax myself so think cars registered after June 2008 should be better value with the emissions rating rather than engine size but I don't know the figures yet. Looking for a big, automatic car with leather seats and a good engine. Moving on from a Volvo so not looking at those and BMW 5 series and Lexus GL450 don't appeal as much as the above two with the missus. 2010ish Passat CC was also semi-ruled out by her taste too and it has to be something we both want a lot. Nothing else too affordable in the luxury type car.

Thought the CLS would be a clear winner but was impressed by the Jaguar when I sat in one and drove it for 5 mins. Opinions?

If you are going for the XF then make sure it is the newer 3.0 litre diesel. It is more powerful, fuel efficient and cheaper to tax than the older 2.7 litre diesel. XF also is only available in auto. Not really into Mercs so have really no information or comments on them.

Audi A5 Sportback might be worth looking at too:

Have a Passat CC myself but it's not even in the same league as the cars above.

That looks very nice actually :) - and its nice to see the old school nice long liftback/sloping long hatch look.

When I mean old school - back in the 80s/90s hatchbacks often had a nicer look at the back rather then the straight down small car/MPV look you get now.

Out of those I'd go for the CLS but that's just because I like them.

when was 3.0 introduced in XF?
I know 3.0 better engine in many ways but the 2.7 is ok too.

Audi does not look as nice as the CLS or XF

Between the CLS of XF I couldn't chose :(

When the OP says work will pay for petrol, I wonder does he mean any type of fuel. I had hoped he meant petrol only!

    There's a 2.2 diesel XF too isn't there?

CLS is a stunning looking car - and ive yet to in in a Merc with poor ride quality.

Id be inclined to go that route - and i believe Merc had started improving the quality again around the 05/06/07 era.

So id say if you like it - go CLS.

Jag XF is a fine looking car too though

The smallest petrol in the cls is 3.5 litre, diesels are 3 litre not sure about the xf though I assume petrol xfs are rare.

I believe the CLS is one of the best looking four door cars ever, it's truly stunning. And it'd be supremely comfortable. Never been in a Merc that isn't comfortable and amazing to drive to boot.

There's always something special about a Jag though.

My mother is getting an A6 in 2014, already test drove one and she loves it.

I'd be seriously tempted by that Audi.

Nice problem to have anyway, ya lucky fecker! :pac:

Be aware of the mildly facelifted CLS (from 08) if getting one. Square exhausts, re profiled bumpers, grill and mirrors together with improved interior display etc.

Jag XF all day. The CLS is a fine car but, to me, it's starting to look a bit dated.

On that note the xf should be due a facelift, the cls has been replaced.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,442 ✭✭✭ofcork

I have heard of some mercs snapping chains,e class iirc but they do need to be replaced at certain mileage anyway circa 80 or 90k miles I think.

Mid 2009. 2.7 was carried over from the old S Type and XJ.

me i'd go for the jag minus the TS reg plate.

I just think all jags and porsches should have a D number plate!

Cls looks very dated now, I guess since it was ahead of its time, but also because Mercedes have moved totally away from that light style on all their models. I'd go for the XF of the two.

Yep, chains are a weakness in a modern merc.

Not crazy money to change them, about 600 at a good indy.

The 3.5 litre petrol engine has issues with balancer shafts. If you google M272 (the engine code) you'll find more info.

why would you want anything else in a car like that?

Exactly - the CLS isn't a sports car - its the sort of car that makes for a nice relaxed way of getting from A to B.

Manual box would be completely out of place on that car - and im normally not a fan of autos per se.

But in a car like that - an automatic gearbox adds to the relaxed driving experience - imo

Gah, I saw a black CLS at the gym this morning and it looked the business.

Both cool cars. Drive both and then decide.
