Anyway to monitor the power consumption of a PC

So I have just upgraded my graphics card from a 7850 to an R9 290 which is quite a jump. The recomended PSU is 750watt but I did some searching around and found a 550 is about the min.

The PC currently has a 550 in it and I think I am just on the bounds of what it can handle, upgrading is not an option for about 2 months due to money/Christmas etc.

Is there any way to monitor what your PC is using to see how close it is?

I could disconnect one of the SSD's but would that make any real difference?

Today when I started it up something sounded a bit off and it took a restart to get going it could be totally unrelated but i don't want the whole thing to go bang and take everything with it.

Whats the rest of your system like? Would depend if you also have a heavy OC on your cpu and what else you have in there.

From having a read around a 290X system will draw between 350-400w under load, closer to 350w in most cases. Thats for the whole system load so you should be ok.

Have a look at this, you can see that the whole system power draw stays under 400W, with the 290X at stock. Overclocking it though does add quite abit more, so maybe leave it at stock till you get a new psu, might be a bit tight.

I've an i5 Processor and two SSD's and the graphics card. That's about it bar mouse, keyboard, motherboard and ram. The external hardrive has its external own power supply.

You should be fine, load with the card at stock seems to peak at around 400w for a whole system. As stated though the card will consume quite a bit more power when overclocked so id be careful if you plan to overclock it.

If your gaming on a 1080p screen you probably shouldnt need to overclock anyway.

    What psu do you have?
    80+ rated?

Cool it's a Super-Flower Amazon 80Plus 550w, no interest in over clocking so should be fine. I think it just needs a formatting and reinstall of windows really. It's done a lot over the last 18 months.
