Moving to Ireland from UK, car and VRT questions...!

Not sure if this is the right forum so please move if best suited somewhere else!

Hubby and I live in the UK and are contemplating a move back to Ireland. If we wanted to take our UK reg cars over, I understand we would need to get them re-regged and pay VRT. How is the VRT worked out? Is it based on the UK value of the car or on the Irish value of the car? I ask because there is a pretty big disparity in car prices/value between the two places!

Hubby is thinking of replacing his car soon so would it still work out cheaper to buy a nice motor here and then go through that process when we get there?

Hubby none the wiser as he's from London so if you can shed any light on this I'd be grateful, thanks a million!

If you've owned and used the vehicle in the UK for more than 6 months and can prove it you are exempt from VRT:
    http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/moving_country/moving_to_ireland/coming_to_live_in_ireland/importing_car_into_ireland.html

But you need to keep the car for 12 months after you import to Ireland if you take advantage of that exemption.

If you want to pay VRT you can use the revenue commis. calculator here, the value is based on the Irish open market price:

I'd add cars here are poorer spec and much dearer than the UK, so if it is more than 6 months before you move, it will be worth your while trading up before you come

That's exactly what Im thinking. Hubby's car is due an upgrade and I think it would be far better to do it from this side than do it when we get there!

    Hi,
Will be bringing back UK registered car to Ireland shortly. I own it for 7 months in the UK so all that end of requirements are in order. However I read the VRT TOR form on the Revenue website and notice that they may ask for UK Fuel receipts, receipt for annual circulation tax, parking receipts etc. Given that I only decided to move back home a month ago it seems unreasonable to suggest that I should have been holding on to fuel receipts etc.
Does anyone have any experience or suggestions that may help when I am dealing with Revenue in order to get the VRT exemption ?
    Thanks.

Can you show a tax disc that was valid for 6 months or more? Do you ever pay for juice by credit card? Your bill will show what stations you used (it won't prove you put the stuff into that car, but no receipt will).

Also, when I imported my car from Germany under the same terms the kinds of docs I showed were rental agreements for my house there, payslips from my job etc. They basically want to know that you really were living normally in the other jurisdiction. Or did back then (it was a good while ago).

    Many thanks,
Did they ask you for petty items like fuel receipts etc. ?
Will they difficult and nitt picky ?
    Thanks

no they probably wont, just amass what paperwork you can get to show you were there.

I found the process to be fine. They want to tick the box that means you haven't invented the 6 months you spent in the UK. So make it clear that you really did.
