Is ashbourne retail park covered by Dublin bus, cos it looks like it is on their website. If not is there an ok train, don't fancy bus eireann.

No Dublin Bus or train. BE use double deckers on high frequency to Ashbourne.

Bus Eireann is the only option.

    Route 103.

    Fares:
    5.80 : Adult Single
    5.50 : Student Single
    3.80 : Child Single
    8.00 : Adult Day Rtn
    5.00 : Child Day Rtn
    9.70 : Adult Rtn
    7.80 : Student Rtn
    6.40 : Child Return
    36.50 : Family Rtn
    37.00 : Adult 10 Jny
    34.50 : Student 10 Jny
    24.00 : Child 10 Jny

Book Online - take 5% off that.

    LEAP fares:
    Single - €4.95
    1 Day - €7.60
    7 Day - €38

Another classic example where the leap is more expensive than the cash fare and when taking into account the 5% discount online the 10 journey ticket is even cheaper for the bog standard commuter working 5 day days a week going in and out of work.

I know the 7 day allows unlimited travel, but I can assure you, most people don't want to go back on the bus again in their spare time.

Leap should always be discounted below any other alternative, otherwise its pointless trying to get people to switch.

Well the bog standard commuter working 5 days a week going in and out of work should really be using a taxsaver commuter ticket.

Not everyone has job security / guaranteed hours or even an employer willing toboperate the scheme to make the taxsaver possible. Also the biggest savings are for the highest earners, who most likely would be driving anyway!

Also my point still stands at €37.00/ 10 journeys = €3.70 per single which is way less than the €4.95 leap single! Why would you bother with leap.

Never understand the continual defending of the NTA/CIE by some posters here!

Where did I defend NTA/CIE in that post? I merely pointed out that Tax Saver offers more options.

You've got to remember that all of this is a phased project. I imagine that the range of tickets will evolve in such a way to make LEAP more attractive. Bear in mind that LEAP is zonal while the cash fares are point to point. I'd expect a greater move towards zonal fares which will facilitate LEAP. That's probably too much of a "Big Bang" right now.

There are other places that LEAP is cheaper than point to point tickets because of the zonal arrangements, it's just not the case with Ashbourne.

Someone had to determine the leapfares for Dublin - Ashbourne. And they decided that it would be dearer than half the adult return fare; assuming the fares listed upthread are correct.

9.70 vs 9.90 for two leap fares

As I said - it's down to the establishment of a zonal fare structure, which is what the LEAP fares are based on.

I'd imagine over time they will migrate all the fares to a zonal structure rather than the traditional staged fare system used for cash fares. That will take a bit of time, as it would be too big a shock to the system to do it in one go.

Is this a zonal fare structure for BÉ services? or all leap fares?

The zonal structure has been introduced for LEAP fares on Bus Eireann.

    http://www.buseireann.ie/inner.php?id=363

    Further developments are outlined here:
    http://www.nationaltransport.ie/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/Bus_Eireann_Eastern_Region_Leap_zonal_1_and_7_day_caps_zonal_taxsaver_tickets.pdf

I'm guessing here, but I would imagine that the thinking is that in the longer term the cash fares will migrate to a similar structure. But, again I'd think that would be a long term objective.

That Zonal Map is shockingly badly designed. There's no idea of where the boundaries are between zones.
The fact the nta's map on page ten of
    http://www.nationaltransport.ie/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/Bus_Eireann_Eastern_Region_Leap_zonal_1_and_7_day_caps_zonal_taxsaver_tickets.pdf
    says
Note: Kilmacanogue which is in the red zone is shown in the wrong zone on the map above

rather than fix the map, is only the most obvious issue.

Is Ballough or Corduff (Lusk) in the Red zone?
    What zone is Newtownmountkennedy in?

I don't disagree with you on any of that!
