Garage Heating

    Hi Guys,

Have a quick question on options to heat a garage. My garage is 25x30' in size - and I've converted upstairs to put in a pool table/ and bar at some stage. Downstairs in the garage I store a classic car - but I have no heating in the garage and I want to see what the best options are. The garage was built with cavity wall insulation, but when I stored stuff upstairs over the winter months mould would form on the items (but nothing on the walls etc). I have noticed that the metal on inside of the window sills would slightly rust up as well.

I have the oil tank behind the garage - so I was thinking one option would be to get a 2nd hand oil burner and install some rads in the garage - and have this set to come on for an hour each day during the winter months.

Other than that - what other energy-efficient options are available? Is Solar an option (dont want to spend mad money!). I reluctant to put in storage heaters as I hear they burn electricity.

Assuming you have some sort of heating at the moment, why not put in a rad and control it with a motorised valve. Or perhaps the garage is well removed from the house and existing heating system. Then perhaps some form of controlled electric heating.

Please follow site and charter rules. "Resistance is futile"

    Hi Wearb,

Have OFCH at the moment - but not connected to the garage. In fact, there is no heating in the garage at the moment. The garage is close to the house, but not attached to it.

It all depends on how many hours heating per day you require and what temperature. The car would be happy with say 10C 24hours per day. Assuming you have electric supply, the low cost option is to buy an oil filled electric radiator and set it to come on at 10C.
Electric has low inatallion cost but high running cost.
OFCH would cost substantially more to install but would be cheaper by the hour.
