Joining a Gym

So me and my Boyfriend are planning to join a gym together to get fit and a way to spend more time with each other.
So this gym is right on my boyfriends doorstep so it handier for him than me to get too, I live half an hour away and have to rely on my dad or the bus to get to it, but the boyfriend said he drop me home because no buses run late late.
We have joined a gym a year ago or so but then it went outta business one of the JJB gyms. So we want to just get fit again and have that nice feeling about yourself after going to the gym.
So im joining it for 6 months at 199 and hes joining for 6 months at 170 cos hes a student.
I was a member of this gym briefly before but lost interest in going really. So said I give it another shot. Im really more into classes than anything in a gym particularly Zumba as its fun exercise! And Im not much of a machine person I did like the rowing and cross trainer but was dodgy on everything else. So think I go for one of these gym assessments things that come with it for free. But Im a bit afraid of them poking and prodding at me and also I never really judged myself by weight more along the lines of dress sizes. On the website they say "qualified fitness instructor will measure your height, weight, body fat, body mass and blood pressure. You'll be given an accurate aerobic bike fitness test" all this doesnt sound like much fun to me!
Theres a new gym about 10/15 mins right beside me and it offers just a class membership scheme with zumba and pilates back to back and its on 2 nights a week for 70 euro a month. It would work out that bit dearer bur probably be worth it.
Just looking for some advice on what to do =)

It's up to you, do whatever works best for you.

If you're worried about the assessment though, I'll let you know how mine went. Got my height measured, stood on a scales, body fat was checked (using this handheld electronic thingy), he asked what my goals were, and then made up a programme and showed me how to use the machines.

I don't think there's any point worrying about the assessment, it's good to know where you're starting from in terms of weight, body fat. They're not there to make you feel embarassed. So I wouldn't worry too much about that.

I would say join the same gym as your boyfriend as you will both be encouragement for each other. If you're not interested in doing a fitness test with an instructor then don't. It's not really supposed to be fun and will be something similar regardless of the gym you go to.

    Unless I'm missing something?

Being tough and being fun are not mutually exclusive.

    Hi

There's a deal running at the moment in the Ben Dunne Carlisle gym in Kimmage where it's 395 for 2 people to join from now til the end of jan 2015 (225 otherwise).

I am hoping to join either this evening or as soon as possible - would anybody like to join with me to save a small bit? We can just meet up at the door.

    Thanks

@Alf - I didn't say otherwise, but hav yet to meet anybody who enjoyed having their bmi or blood pressure taken.

It might be worthwhile making sure that you both can get what you want out of the gym. If he's eyeing up the weights room and you're thinking aerobics classes then you're not going to be spending much time together.

If it's exercise that you're after combined with time with your boyfriend you could also try dance classes, tandem cycling, running (or one running, one cycling) and a host of other sports/activities that can be shared. You could both take up something new and unusual like archery or (in the summer) water skiing.

This by the way reflects my own view of a gym as a place to work on all the little stuff that enables me to take part in sports. I'm aware that there are people who intrinsically enjoy going to the gym. Anecdotally though and based on the uses per membership no.s that are occasionally reported on there are more people who don't enjoy going to the gym per se. So, just make sure that you know what you're getting into before you shell out the money.

Thought you meant working out in general.

    But you didn't....lean ar aghaidh.

I am just wondering would any1 be interested in joining the north wood branch with me. We could just meet outside the branch whenever suits.

    Thanks

Could he join the one near you? Saves you bus and having to get lift. Also I think you said was cheaper. If he was going to leave you home anyway, it is same trip for him?
