Buying golf clubs for husband- advice needed

    Hi,

My husband has been hoping for a new set of clubs this last while. He has a beginner set but has advanced to a good standard of intermediate. He joined the golf club in work and goes once a month during the good months. He loves it. I was also going to organise a couple of lessons- he said he wanted to run through something with an instructor. Any recommendations here would be great.

I understand he needs to be fit for the clubs so buying them myself is not a good idea but my questions are:

How much of a gift card should I buy? (We are a standard living young family so nothing fancy).

Would I be best bringing him to the golf store and just paying when he selects his clubs rather than buying a gift card?

What store do you recommend? We are in West Wicklow so our closest would be American Golf in Tallaght. I don't mind travel though- if there is a highly recommended knowledgable store elsewhere in the Dublin region.

Do you recommend a particular brand or is this a preference kind of thing?

    Any other advice?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
If he needs everything from Driver thru to Putter u could be talking over €1000. if it is just a set of Irons then he could pick up last years model for under €500. If he is just playing with a works society and once a month then a brand like MD golf are a decent stepping stone and you will pick them up for around €250. For a driver look at a Taylormade they have a new model every 4 months so the one a year old will be a decent price now should be well under €200.
If you are on a budget then but the irons new but have a look at the second hand section for a driver and 3 wood.

It sounds like he is in a work society rather than a golf club.
New equipment is pretty expensive, there's great value out there in second hand equipment though. Adverts.ie is a good place to pick up a bargain.

Not sure what budget you have in mind, but a set of 3 lessons would set you back somewhere in the region of €75-90 euro, you might get a deal for less.
It might be best to get him a set of lessons, he'll probably improve more from getting these than clubs.
The Pro might be able to advise him on the best 2nd hand set of clubs to get down the line.

You could ring the golf clubs/driving ranges around you to see what lessons they offer, or some lads on here might have recommendations on teaching pros in the area. I'm not familiar with any in that neck of the woods.

If you're really keen on getting him a piece of equipment, then a putter might be the safest thing to get, of all the clubs, the putter is the most standard in make and the least likely not to suit him. You'll get a nice new putter for less than €100, there are plenty more expensive ones out there but you don't have to spend crazy money on it.

    He may like his putter^^^^^
Give him a voucher to the value you would normally spend on him
He can use it when necessary, possibly during the sales
Also after a lesson or 2 he may have a better idea of what to look for

The thought of my missus buying something for me would annoy me
Not for the thought which is wonderful but for the fact of her being ripped off by a shop assistant more interested in a sale which can happen more so at this time of year

Take it from someone who has got pro v1's with happy Xmas stamped on them for €60,mittens for €40 that I already had & baseball cap that she was stung for €40 among the other stuff
While all were received great fully what annoys me is knowing I would get theses for less or something better for the same money

Don't rule out a round of golf for 2 at a course he has not played before

Golf equipment is expensive and it's great to have a voucher in hand when your picking something

Good point Soundsham.... let them get ripped off but be sure to get them to ask for gift receipt, that way you'll have more to spend when you go back in to return them :D

I would get him a voucher for a golf shop, rather than blindly buying him clubs, theres too many if's and but's and variables to golf clubs,
He might get a good second hand set.
It sounds like he has joined a society at work, why not make his christmas by looking up any good deals on local golf club membership , depends on what part of the country you are in, but some clubs are doing a amazing intro deals to get members.
