The ford focus is a very good car indeed except for its Achilles heal, the engine.
If that engine has not been serviced regularly with the correct oil it could be a bad experience.
Not serviced properly will cause carbon to build up in the engine to the extend that it will first do in the turbo and then it will self distruct.
This engine is the same version of the psa DV6 engine as fitted to peugeots; Citroens, volvos, minis etc.

Yet, the poor reliability of this engine is always overstated.

If it's been looked after, it will be more than likely fine.

Ill be going to a dealer and know a few lads handy with spanners so they will be giving it a once over! thanks

I think the 1.8 is a lot better engine than the 1.6

The 115bhp 1.6 TDCI in the latest model is great.

    1.8:

    Pro's: Very reliable
Cons: DPF is guaranteed to fail, old engine with a very small power band.

    1.6: Also very reliable
Cons: Reliability is heavily dependent on correct servicing, new engine, big power band so more drivable.

Get a 1.6 110hp, de-dpf it and remap it via dyno to 130hp...... As I did to my wifes Focus - it really trasnformed it, quick car!
