A neighbour has a good few 260kgs dairy bred angus heifers for sale.
They are March 2013 born, what sort of money could I expect to pay for them?

British Freisan, I've killed their 2012 compatriots and they were all O+'s or O='s...

1.85 a kilo at most. Not many would be buying those weights and wintering them imo so should be got cheap enough.

They would make 500 no bother down my side of the country if they were nice stock,

Ya, I'd say anything under 500 and your doing well, they'd make just over 500 down here aswell.

At 500 euro in the yard they will be costing you 630-650 next March at max they will be 300kgs. Will 300kgs one cost that next March. From what I can see coloured bulls and heifers are over priced at present especially AAX and HEX stock and heifers especially.

Doing the sums and managing them well will they be 500 LW next Christmas killing 260kgs. You will need them to preform like that to achiever a margin over direct costs of 200 euro. I think there is better value in cattle out there

Killed the last of the AAX hfrs last week. At €4.10/kg+BQAS +20cAA premium, they came into €1050-1200 at 230-255kg carcase.
They were the smallest of mine, born April 2012, 19Mths. Had a good do all year and 125kg nuts/head in last 5 weeks. Couple of R's, mainly O's.
    AAX hfrs are small. Always!
Agree that there is better value out there than buying them at €500. They will be tightened to make much more in Spring, depending on weather.

I would thought have that march born now weighting 260 would perform better than that

we killed the last of our '12 heifers lately between 230 and 260 kgs

they were born late apr to late may and actually didn't get the benefit of grass 'till late may

mostly hex from our own cows

0.7kgs/day on average over 12 months would be very good going for most AA heifers off fresian cows.

500 is plenty for them as said above especially given their breeding.

As Pudsey says too much "auld lad" buying going on at present driving AA and HE prices up to uneconomical levels.

Of course in case, Locky is buying direct and knows the farmer so can afford to go a little more as no commission etc.

Yep, would support that over 12 mth period. 1kg on grass, .5 in shed.

No nut in 2nd summer, but top-quality grass, 2-3 day paddocks.
Bucket-reared, nut until fully out and comfortable on grass after rearing, 3-4 months. Store over winter, but this lot needed 2kg as silage was poor.
This years bunch on 70+DMD with 15% protein silage, so no meal.

For finish, 5 weeks, raising to 4kg/day, still out on good grass, access to hay/silage.
That is standard bonus (changes from 10-20c depending on dates).
AAA bonus adds another bit if you kill over 50 "approved" (!) cattle per year.
See angus producer website for details.

I wish you look with them, will you keep them for sucklers or send them to factory?
