Time to invest in a stair gate. Anyone seen any offers on them lately or know where to get the best value one??

we got the lindham extending wooden ones in argos and we're very happy with them. if you have a fairly wide staircase i'd highly recommend them, but they do need to be securely installed. if you have plasterboard walls, you'll need some heavy duty mounts or they will eventually come off the wall due to the repeated opening and closing, even with proper plasterboard raw plugs.

woodies have great heavy duty plasterboard fittings that can take up to 45kg in weight (each) so a couple of them on the hinge side will do the trick. we screwed a wooden baton to the wall with these and then screwed the gates to that and it's worked perfectly. :)

if you can't make a mess of the wall (if you're renting etc.) then the lindham gates that work on pressure are also very good. we have one of those as well to keep the little dude out of a particular room. http://www.lindam.com/product/safety-gates/easy-fit-plus--tall.html

We have wooden baby dan ones from argos. Find them great. They have no bar at the bottom to trip over and go both ways which is brill. Easy to open with one hand while carrying baby

careful with the pressure mounted gates if you have an active, inventive toddler...ours managed to dislodge the gate from the wall by banging against it with his bum - and then fell down the stairs backwards as the gate opened... didnt get hurt thankfully, but could have been messy. Wall mounts all the way for us...
