With an iPhone, you can sign up to iCloud and every time the device is charging and connected to wifi an automatic backup is taken. For me, and it has happened on occasions, if something happens the iPhone during the day I can get a replacement and do a restore from the last backup.

When I used the old Nokias, I would connect to the laptop and do a backup often.

So I want to try out some Androids eg Nexus 5 and am wondering what will do the same for me.

It's essential for business that I don't lose texts, call logs or pictures. I am using gmail for storing my contacts.

I need a simple all in one solution. I shouldn't have to root the device. I'm not into social networking with google plus. Music is not an issue. I suppose I could use Dropbox for the photos, but am often have poor cellular coverage and am restricted to 1GB/ month.

Maybe these Androids are not really suitable as business phones at all??

Sms backup and restore will do timed back ups of texts and send them to drop box.
If you want everything backed and don't mind connecting it to a pc, you can try carbon which takes a full back up and stores in on your HDD.
