A helicopter has crashed into a pub on the banks of the River Clyde in Glasgow, MP Jim Murphy has told BBC News.

The accident is said to have happened at the Clutha Vaults in Stockwell Street.

Mr Murphy, the shadow development secretary, said there had been multiple injuries.

Speaking to the BBC News Channel he said the fire brigade told him a helicopter crash had taken place.

He reported a "pile of people" clambering out of a pub.

He said there were about 40 fire brigade staff at the scene and said passers-by had helped at the scene.

Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said it was "absolutely awful news".

"My thoughts are with everyone involved and the emergency services," she said.

How can a copper helicopter even get off the ground?
    It doesn't make sense!

SKY have someone on the phone at the scene - an ordinary Joe, between them they are not helping to cast much useful light on proceedings.

By the sounds of it, it didn't last too long in the air anyway.

Went past it a couple minutes after it had happened, absolutely crazy scene. Loads of fire engines and polices. Can still hear a lot of sirens. I thought it was a car crash at first.

Hope everyone is alright, makes me cringe to think what's going on down the road.

I'm only guessing but the engine sounds pretty vital tbh - a plane can glide to some extent, but a chopper is going down rapido without its motor.

@gordonsmart @beachthistle Looks like pilot performed autorotation, killed engine and dumped fuel. His heroic actions saved many lives.

Its odd STV have confirmed the deaths but the BBC News is keeping their lips buttoned for some reason.

I know, my sil is a helicopter crewman in AC - but autorotation is a controlledish crash at best - the tail rotor is engine driven and controls stability - you're going down, and going down fast.

Not necessarily, read the link. If you have some forward velocity it helps.

But yes, controlled crash is right. Still better than dropping like a rock!

They're probably waiting to ensure the family's of the victims are informed, it's pretty obvious that the three occupants of the helicopter didn't survive.

reports may or may not* be saying that a building on the banks of the Clyde has collapsed...............

The Scottish government rents 65,000 square feet of the 90,000-square foot building at 150 Broomielaw on the banks of the Clyde. Standard Life bought the property in 2004 for £37 million.

29/11 doesnt have the same ring to it as 9/11

    *probably not
