Have suzuki vitara diesel 150k on clock and turbo has shot. Cost around 1500 to replace. Is this a fault or what causes turbos to give up like this

Probably to do with oil. Turbochargers tend to get very grumpy over lubrication issues. How's the service history?

Shawnee - how did it fail - I mean what went wrong with the car prior to diagnoses of the turbo going.

For example was it down on power/smoky - what I mean was what were the symptoms of the problem.

Im no expert - but with that info - some of the other lads here would be in a better position to be able to give guidance.

Why do people think turbos will last forever? There are moving parts in them and they will fail over time even with regular oil changes.

op where did you get that price? main dealer? what year is it?

That's a good point Sean - and if its the original turbo - then that's a likely scenario.

Turbos on diesels (in general) - often fail at not much more then half the mileage on OPs Vitara

If this is a 2.0 hdi they generally fail very early. had one go at 35k. they were notorious. got a secondhand one for 100 pounds in traynors. easy enough to fit.

Hello !!!! 150k is not forever. Of course it's a moving part , friend has a merc with 500k miles on it and turbo has never been an issue. Not good enough and yes it is a main dealer price.:(

Didn't seem to be down on power , just started to give a loud screeching noise, no prior warning really.

Oil would have been changed regularily , not by main dealer all the time.

stick in a second hand turbo from a breakers or have your own reconditioned for about 300! No reason in the world to go back to the dealers for this and pay 1500. I don't understand why people think the main dealer is the answer to all their problems!!

should be able to get the turbo recon for around 300

I wouldn't bother with a second hand turbo myself unless you plan to get rid of it straight away.

That crowd are meant to be one of the best in the country at rebuilding them. You may get cheaper ones but he will tell you that they end up repairing them after some of the cheaper crowds make a mess of them.

Reconditioned turbo is the way to go.

Turbos failures are not uncommon even with perfect service history and good quality oil used.
