Kevlar Tyres? Which ones?

    Hi,
I have a specialized allez I use for work. I've gotten 3 punctures in as many months so need to invest in Kevlars.

Does anybody know what to look for? Any good sites out there?

    Wheels are 700 x 23.

    Thanks in advance

I've used both the Panaracer Pasela Tour Guard and the Schwalbe Marathon Plus before to good results.

The Marathons are a pig to get onto the rim when you do have a puncture (just the once with me, right before an exam too) though and are a bit heavier than the Panaracers.

The smallest Marathons are 700x25 and require a bit more clearance than the average 700x25 tyre. I managed to squeeze them on my beater but there's less than 1mm of clearance on the rear wheel.

The pasela comes in 23c size and I'd imagine they're true enough to their size as the 25mm was (it was smaller than the 25mm marathon which I'd nearly peg closer to a 28mm)

I'm on my second set of Specialized Armadillo's. Excellent tyres IMO.

+1 on the armadillos. The first two I got, the rubber pealed off after a few months which was disappointing. However, the second set wore right down to the canvass with excellent puncture protection. Personally, I think I was just unlucky with the first pair.

I'm using gatorskins now and they seem quite good also.

I'd steer clear or panracer ribmos anyway. I'd the same problem as OP when I started commuting and was advised them. They are more expensive(usually) and I found that they'd eventually get sliced by bit of glass right through the kevlar forcing me to buy a new tyre. :-( Even though they had hardly any wear on them. After a few ribmos I switched to armadillos on a recommendation. You don't see armadillos on sale as often as gatorskins though.

    Great stuff.

    Gonna go for the armadillos.

Any sites particularly good for these?

I tried wiggle but no joy.

I've never actually seen them online I don't think! There are some good deals on gatorskins though. I got two at a time ordered in at my LBS and they were reasonable enough.
Edit - I got the armadillos ordered in that is.

I done 2500km on Schwalbe Luganos with zero punctures. They have a Kevlar belt. They're reasonably priced and roll well, what more do you need, although saying that I did expect slightly more wear from them but can't complain otherwise.

Make your own puncture resistant tubes. Get an old tube and cut off the valve. Then cut along the tube so that you can wrap it around a good inner tube. Then fit the tube in the normal way. Once fitted, the tube is now twice as thick as a standard tube.

I bought mine in Cycleways on Parnell St. I think they are around €29.99. I've not had 1 puncture on them in nearly 4 years of commuting.

I rang in advance of calling in and they held a set for me.

Thats insane, 4 years of commuting and never a puncture? You gliding along of something :D. Seems like a great price though.
