Finished my final round for my handicap today
    3 rounds of 93, 94 and 96

    Par is 66

Anyone know how they'll calculate it ?

Depends on club. My guess is 18. But could be anywhere from 18 to 24

With Par being 66 I'd be inclined to say a little higher than 18, maybe 20.
As Alx said, it's all down to the club/HC sec.

Go through your cards and reduce anything more than a double bogey back to a double and then do a quick tot. They'll look at consistency which you seem to have on your cards and if there is a run of pars like 3/4 then they'll be inclined to give you something lower as it shows potential.

Well done on 3 solid rounds, took me a long time to break 100, an even longer time to break 95 and just broke 90 last Sunday for the first time so keep up the good shooting!

    Missed that question:

There is no rule for calculations Ryaner, just guidlines.
What they will generally do is look at your card and mark everything down to a Double Bogey at worst.
So, if you had a 7 on a par 3, that would be put down to a 5.
This could turn your card of 93 into a card of 88 etc.
If your course is 66, then that would leave you with a HC off 22... but again, the HC sec can err on the side of caution and take another few shots of you.

Cheers lads. Looking forward to getting it and finally have a real target to play against.

Is it the club or GUI that decides the HC?

    The club will.

Your scores are decent enough as I may be wrong but with par 66 it must be corballis you are playing. Very easy to drop shots there and lose balls so stroke play is difficult. You might do well with your handicap if you go play sonewhere that's a little more forgiving.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,104 ✭✭✭ryaner777

    Yeah it's corballis I joined.

Keeping the ball in play can be a bit tricky alright.

They have qualifying comps all through the winter so should be able to get working on it straight away.

The 3 cards I put in went 96,94,93 so it's going in the right direction and the more I get to know the course I'm sure there's much better scores there for me.

Everything to a double bogey at worst then take your best front at back 9's

how many points did you have off 18, how many blanks?
gross score on it's own doesn't tell enough, maybe you had a 15 somewhere for example.

Didn't keep a copy of the cards but I'd say approx 25 pts per round off 18.

No mad double figures. A few 8's and one 9 I think.

I presume there was placing?, can you put in 3 cards when placing is in force?

Doubt there was placing in Corballis to be honest

A few 8's and one 9 on a course with only 1 par 5 means you must have been pretty steady other than that.

I can't see them giving you more than 18

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 69 ✭✭robbok

Well done on those scores, what did they give you ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,104 ✭✭✭ryaner777

Will hopefully find out tomorrow, going to head out in the morning ( depending on the weather and get a round in ) I'll update as soon as I can.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,104 ✭✭✭ryaner777

Couldn't wait so gave them a call to see if it was available. They said it hasn't been updated by the HC secetary yet. So may have to wait a little longer.

Does anyone know if my round tomorrow will affect the HC once it's issued ?

    Cheers

Assuming it's a casual round Ryaner? If so, then it won't affect it (unless you're playing with the HC Sec himself and you shoot the lights out :) )
If it's a comp, then double check with them before you play that he hasn't given you one.

It's an open tomorrow. I'm guessing that counts as a comp ?

Is the Open in your home club?

    Yeah.

Wouldn't have thought you'd be able to enter the comp without your official handicap yet, so presumably they'll it there for you when you arrive tomorrow?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,104 ✭✭✭ryaner777

I don't mind not being able to enter the comp to be honest. It's more to do with if it shoudl affect my HC or not ?

I know theres alot on here about not returning cards and as its my first club I just want to make sure I'm following correct proceedure.

Do I return the card even if I don't have my HC yet ?

Best of luck in Corballis - very tough course. I played a good bit out there last year. Was very close to joining myself.

Had a great round one day with 14 pars - ended up 14 over :o - so that sums up Corballis. It is a nightmare - even with a slight error - you could be 8 or 9. It teaches you course management, by stealing your balls from you.

The key to the course is good iron shots off certain tees - like 2, 5, 7, 11. Going for greens off tee in Corballis is a headbangers game.

Great course to try break 80 ;)

I still think number 3 there is one of the hardest in the country, I'd say if you par it 1 out of 10 it is good going. A great drive is leaving you mid iron in at least. A 3 wood is leaving you another 3 wood in. Unless it is summer with a tail wind rare on that hole)

The great thing about it, it is always open. I've seen that place open in storms, frost (slight delay) , played in snow, often seen lads come from all over the place as they know it is open. The greens are made of kryptonite - not the best in the world -good - but open all year and tough.

The only bad thing about Corballis is the last 5 don't live up to the rest. Also can be a bit slow at certain times. That is because it is a course you need to know to go out on.

It is a pity they lack the room to make it a 72 - could have been up there with the Island if they had the space. The Island is Corballis on steroids.

Seeing that it's his home club, they'll prob let him out in the Open even if he doesn't have his HC.

Ryaner, if you don't have your HC before the first tee you won't be able to compete, but they should let you play in it.

Just got a text from the club and I've a HC of 21.

Is getting down to 16 to big of a goal for 2014 ?

Also I've got my GUI number. How do I sign up for golfnet ?

    Cheers

Congrats Ryanner, if you're gonna be a bear be a grizzly bear.
Go for 16, it'll take a bit of effort but if you can get to grips with the way to play Corballis then I wouldn't put it past you.

I always get these wrong/mixed up, but here goes
Try a combo if they don't work.

    Golfnet:
    Username is your GUI number
Password is "Password" for your first log in

    BRS
    Username is your GUI number
    Password is your GUI number

Cheers lads, Might start a little blog like some of the lads on here to keep the goal on track.

I tried a few different combos on golfnet but they didn’t seem to work. Might be because it’s just been set up ?

I’ll ask out in the course on Friday.

Don’t think corballis use the BRS system yet.
