Are they in a shed? If the others were rising on him they could have hurt his back. Have seen this before and they're in such pain they won't get up. Even after weeks of painkillers they end up dying anyway.

Yea in shed on straw. That may be the case, but have a feeling it's something else. Thanks for reply

was another thread on a similar animal on here last week, the calf needs energy, in that case the vet reccommended eggs and life aid. Might also be an idea to get it standing up somehow to get the circulation going. If your dad doesnt want the vet to come out , maybe if you went to the vets and got a few injections for the calf

Can you roll him over on his other side. Keeping him turned like that stops him going numb on one side.

Have any of your neighbors got a hip clamp that's used to lift downer cows .
It might get him putting a bit of weight on it slowly .
    Rolled oats for energy .
He would really need a proper examination by the vet to see what's causing it though ..

    Energy, energy, energy.. & Rehydration!!

Downer animals suffer from both of these problems, compounding their inability to rise... He may well have gone down from a hurt and now just cant get up...

Get as much electrolyte into him as you can... 6+l a day. You can make your own to cut the costs..

I'd concur with the eggs, 2-3 eggs 2-3 times a day. Seems to help any weak animal...

If the vet can't be called then while your home see what you can do to build this animal's strength up and maybe Sunday get a few folks round for a lift...

But... its hard to beleive that for any 8 month old animal that a vet callout isn't warrented, if he stays down he's a gonner, at least by getting him up ye will be saving a total loss..

Would there be total war if you went ahead and called the vet anyway ??

There wouldn't be war ha, but he thinks the calf is already on the way out/vet wouldnt be much help to it , so it would be a waste of a visit in his eyes ( I can't make the decisions here yet :/ ) . But thanks for advice , ill get some eggs into his feed, he's eating nuts and silage atm so ill try lift him again tomorrow/Sunday

Well if there wouldn't be war I'd be calling the vet myself.
Might help the father understand your serious.

Other than that feed and rehydrate, and it needs to be turned daily as said before. You try lying on one side for a week and see how stuff you feel.

I couldn't watch an animal lying round like that and not getting a fair crack at a recovery. Your father needs to step up and either get the vet out or shoot it if he's so sure it's a lost case.
