This may be a stupid question, but how much space would be left in a standard bike box after it's packed in? And by bike box i just mean a cardboard box i get from a bike shop for a 29er bike.

I'm just asking as i'm bringing my bike on a flight soon, but may need to try and fit a 3rd wheel in there. I'm buying an Extrawheel (http://www.extrawheel.com/) and had originally planned on shipping it over to my cousin in New Zealand, but she won't be around so i need to bring it with me.

I recently got a bike box from a shop to ship a bike (by an international courier). Standard bike delivery boxes are pretty big, because the bikes are shipped more or less assembled - just with handlebars turned etc.
You'll fit a 3rd wheel I reckon, if you're prepared to remove bits from your bike to pack everything in more effectively- i.e. take off handlebars, maybe derailleur, even the fork, etc. An hour of work to reassemble when you land. Make sure your multitool will do everything you need. Find some stuff to wrap tubes etc if you want to avoid scratches (maybe use some clothes, but keep an eye on whatever weight limit the airline uses). Anything pointy like wheel axles will probably end up sticking out through the cardboard unless you can find plastic things to slip over them (the bike shop might have some left over).
The bike box doesn't have to be the same perfect rectangle as when the shop took delivery of its bike - things can (and will) bulge out a bit. Use plenty of duct tape. And bring your pedal spanner...
