Here is a link to Ayrton Senna's famous Leinster Trophy win at Mondello Park back in 1982. Apologies for the quality- but it is definitely worth a watch! Bit of Production Saloon racing afterwards too (all classics now!!)
    Enjoy!

I'm sure that was live on TV. RTE used to show the Leinster Trophy and other races in the 80s.

As a youngster I was either at that or the Phoenix Park races that year. The official programme is back in my parents house I must check.

That's insane, once he overtook for 1st place he pulls out something like a 5 or 6 second lead in the next lap....

the other guys didn't look like they were holding back either. I guess that goes to show the difference between people that are really, really, good at what they do and someone who's a genius at it.

I think one of the Irish lads lost a gear or something though?

I was there that day and it really takes me back. Was also at Donington in 1993 but that's another tale. What it really takes me back to is a time when Mondello etc. really felt like a rung on the single seater ladder. For many years FF 1600 and 2000 and latterly F Opel allowed Irish drivers to compete successfully with overseas drivers when they came here and when ours went abroad. This applied to young drivers who started what became decent careers but also the veterans such as the late Vivion Daly who could make the odd foray abroad and race at the sharp end. With all due respects to Formula Vee there just is not enough of it abroad for it to fulfil this role.

What seemed to be the cause of this to me was the decision to go with Formula Ireland. This made us a bit isolated on the ladder. Another thing that appears to have happened is that during the tiger years young drivers were able to go straight from karting to a career in the UK.

Great and unique coverage of a truly outstanding Racing driver, decent sized crowd in Mondello that day too.

Kudos to those who all saw Senna live.

With this, I see another example of how out on his own this guy was. Like qualifying for the 1989 Japanese GP at over a second faster than Prost. 1988 Monaco qualifying, 1984 Merc saloon race, Donington 93, Estoril 85, Monaco 84, 65 poles, pole at twisty Aida 94 against Schumacher in the more nimble Bennetton - the guy was the best ever, no doubts for me.
