No doubt this is a stupid question but Ive asked as few cyclists i know and they couldnt tell me ! Most cycle paths are on left side of road.i always assumed you should only cycle with flow of traffic but can cyclists use in both directions?

If they are on the road surface, unless signed other wise, they are definatly one way, ie, with the traffic flow.

Yes they are definitely one-way, unless specially marked. People who ride against the flow are called "salmon" :)

Thanks, thats what i thought. A few times Ive been abused by motorists telling me to get off the road and use the cycle path on the opposite side of the road so made me wonder if i misunderstood! Nah, they were obviously just being ignorant in both senses of the word

What about a cycle path off-road? There are no signs other than a picture of a bicycle painted on the path.

All is explained in here http://www.rulesoftheroad.ie/rules-of-the-road-eng.pdf as a road user it's a good idea to be aware of the rules.

If the wheels are towards you, your ok! I'm not an expert though. I usually stick to the roads.

There is no requirement to use cycle paths, so it doesn't matter what side of the road a cycle path is on, you don't have to use them. Whereas abusing other road users is very much against the rules.

    I don't think anyone cares.

    Cyclists, motorists, pedestrians.

    The lines are so blurred

Nail on the head. Would agree here.
