Straight out over the tree is the only way to go :) , not an issue at all from whites and off blues the line isn't over the tree. For me its big loss tho as takes a big visual element from the hole and if they put in bunkers they might not be in play for pros from tee.

They are adding new tees and 9 bunkers so will be interested to see over coming months where the new tees will be. i have been told of few that might be added. 18th is one obviously
Probably could do with a bunker on the small par 3 on 11. Not a lot of scope there to push a tee back. Also maybe the around the 9th green.

Good to see McIlroy seems on board!!

It is actually embarrassing that it is only confirmed or being talk about as confirmed now.

I know the dates and location of all our society outings for next year for 2 months now.

    A joke - I don't care what anybody says.

European tour site. I suggested to the Mrs last night that we both go and make a weekend of it. She said she'd go to the golf if I promised to go shopping with her for the entire next day.

So 1 ticket required here............ :D

Well there is one left and water right but one at the back maybe? The 9th is a pretty shallow green and long is nasty spot, the small bunker maybe doesn't catch enough shots but id say it will be left alone.

holes like 11 and 12 there is nowhere to go regards new tee boxes. personally i hope they don't go silly with the oh we need length length length

Here's a rough estimate of the distance. I'd love to see the big hitters have a pop off the green. Although there's OB on the right, and it's uphill, so I doubt it. Probably a wood/iron for position.

The Championship tees are back a good bit further than that, across the pond nearer the practice green

Graeme McDowell has just said he can't wait to play as well.

Cheers. Never noticed them there. Will keep an eye out next time I'm there.

That would explain why that tree is not in play from the back sticks.

I wonder if there is a chance they will use the new 9, probably change some of the Par 5's into 4's ?

No bother, I just think the was more important aesthetically for the hole really. Even from the back sticks the pros would fly over it if they wanted but there's no point cos left side of fairway leaves a better angle to approach the green.

I'd like to volunteer/marshal during the event.
Would the team be selected from the clubs membership or are there any pre-requisites for applying?

Last time it was done through the clubs so i would check with your local one

I think the main problem Fixed was actually getting the main sponsors on board and obviously they have a say as well.

Fair enough - but it is very amateurish.

They need to somehow put together a plan the next few years.

God no, never, the new 9 is horrendous, dull, bland and boring, like chalk and cheese compared to the original 18.

Yes very amateurish indeed, because organising a tour event is just like organising society outings.

Great to have the Irish open back in Cork ,Fota is an excellent venue and the attendances will be excellent.

I was at the Open there in 2001 and 2002 and I have to say I have never seen a golf course in better condition ,it was immaculate, the fairways were like greens.
I remember the pros were genuinely raving about how good the course condition .

No child ticket prices there. Is it safe to assume that they are free with an accompanying adult? I think this was the case last year.

Last year it was kids under 16 went free. I would imagine the same applies.

thinking ahead a bit here. I'll definitely be able to go Saturday and Sunday. However with work Thursday and Friday will be a bit difficult.

Would there be a last entry time you'd be allowed enter the course each day? I could maybe make it for 4 o'clock these days, if I got to see a couple hours of the action I'd be happy and a season ticket would work out good value

BAM to Sponsor Irish Open at Fota Island

BAM, Ireland’s largest public works construction company, has announced that it will become an Official Sponsor to the Irish Open Golf Championship which will take place at Fota Island Resort from June 19th – 22nd.

The presence of The European Tour’s top stars at this year’s tournament, including World Number Six and double Major Champion Rory McIlroy, is expected to deliver a significant boost to the event and the region. The Irish Open was last played in Cork in 2002 when Denmark’s Søren Hansen took the title at Fota Island and the Resort also hosted the Championship in 2001, when Colin Montgomerie won the last of his three Irish Opens. This year’s tournament is also being supported by Cork County Council, Cork City Council, Fáilte Ireland and the Kang family.

Discussing the sponsorship, Theo Cullinane, Chief Executive, BAM said: “BAM is delighted to join with Cork City and County Councils in partnering with the Irish Government and Fáilte Ireland to sponsor this fantastic sporting and tourism initiative. The Irish Open in Fota will showcase the Munster region to a worldwide audience and will be a major boost for businesses in Cork. We look forward to playing an active role in supporting what promises to be Ireland’s sporting highlight of 2014. The region is well geared to cope with the significant numbers who will attend the event, with major infrastructural projects having been completed in recent years, many of which BAM has delivered."

Minister for Transport, Tourism & Sport Leo Varadkar said: “Golf is one of Ireland’s most important tourist activities. Around 160,000 overseas visitors take part in golf during their visit to Ireland every year, contributing €202 million to the economy. The Irish Open is a great advertisement for Irish golf, showcasing our beautiful scenery, world class courses and facilities and warm and friendly people. And this year we can look forward to watching the event at one of Ireland’s most beautiful golf courses in Fota.”

James Finnigan, Commercial Director of the Irish Open said: “The European Tour is pleased to welcome BAM into the 2014 Irish Open as one of our Official Sponsors. It is exciting news for the Irish Open to have an organisation of this quality and scale supporting our decision to bring Ireland’s National Championship to the beautiful Fota Island Resort in County Cork. On behalf of the European Tour, I would like to thank Theo Cullinane and BAM for their commitment to the Irish Open.”

The last time it was in Fota was the academy there then? Or has that only been built in recent years. Looking forward to seeing the pros on the range

John Daly confirmed for Fota. Would he still draw a big crowd? Will definitely follow him for a few holes myself.

Played Fota yesterday , I love it and have never found it in bad condition . Yesterday was no exception thankfully . A few new tee boxes put in just to add a bit of length ( badly needed ) JOKE ... The place is looking great aesthetically. They lost quite a few trees but the only one I noticed was the large old one on the right hand side half way up the first fairway . They have replanted 2 fairly mature trees at a cost of a couple of thousands euros . Mature maybe but obviously nothing like the one they lost , shame . Lots of other new ones around too but it will take years before they come into play . The new owners seem to be spending the money alright , more stone walls to car parks etc all in keeping with the feel of the resort . Can't wait for June .

One to look out for is the new tee on No6. Its right down on the edge of the water. It makes the drive so much more interesting: A big carry over trees, and if you are standing up on the old tee box you'll get a great view of shots coming into the 5th green as well as a great view of the players teeing off on 6. This should be a great spot to stay around.

I'm not sure where the new tee on No10 will be exactly but looks like it will now be a double dog leg Par 5 requiring a fade off the tee and a draw into the green.

It will be a great Open for spectators

6th tee is nice addition alright peepee, wouldn't agree it's big carry really but nice looking tee shot and anything moving left is dead.
The 10th tee is just left of 9th green so can no longer see down the fairway which is pity and it will require a fade, I've hit p wedge a few times with second from tips so these lads would destroy it. I did like the visual aspect of the drive tho and so what if birdies being gotten all day it's no different than each week on tv , they can still hit poor drive or find the water.

Wow. So the tee is sort of tucked in towards the end of the tree line at the water side of the 5th green?
