This is probably a stupid question but Im in the horrible position where I had to apply to the Community Welfare Officer for help with paying a Bord Gais bill that I had fallen behind with due to illness, I received a cheque in the post today with a small amount towards it but its a Bank of Ireland cheque in the name of Bord Gais, so what do I do with that, I presume I cant Lodge that in my own bank a/c, can I send it straight to Bord Gais? Have been trying to ring CWO and cant get through

If you have a home branch of Bank Of Ireland you may be able to get it put into your account immediately. Not sure how long it takes otherwise.
Would think if it was addressed to you, you wouldn't be able to forward it to the Gas people. Not sure how that works though, seem to be a lot of changes in that area over the last few years. You used to be able to get certain shops to cash dole cheques for you once you endorsed them and now can't as far as I am aware.

Not sure where you#re left if you don't actually have a bank account

It's perfectly normal for the cheque to be in the name of Bord Gais; this is to stop you spending it and ensuring Bord Gais get their money.
You can send Bord Gais the cheque.

What's the problem? You asked for money for gas bill and they gave you a cheque made out to gas company?
Why not send the cheque direct to gas company?

Yes. Write your Bord Gais reference number clearly on the top/reverse of the cheque & also attach a payment advice slip from the bottom of a bill/overdue notice.
