    Hey you guys,
Im looking for some advice on my motor please if someone can help.
I bought a car mid way through october. The previous owner said he hasnt taxed the car in over a year. I want to tax the car now.
So heres the thing i havent been using the car because it required repair and i see now that the off the road system has changed. What i would normally do here is go to the tax office and pay for 3 months. I would loose october and november to arrears and the new disc would expire the 31st of oct. Is this still ok to do or has this changed also? i have no problem paying the arrears but i am really broke at the moment and read here in another thread that arrears needded to be paid first then 3 months aqquired.

Ps . would it be possible for me to transfer ownership to my wife and avoid the arrears completly ?

Thanks very much guys any advice would be great

Short answer, yes, you can transfer the ownership to your wife.

just send the VLC to shannon.

The same system applies in that you simply pay the arrears to the 1st day of the month you bought the car, the only thing that has changed is that you can no longer declare the car off the road retrospectively.

You could also transfer ownership to your wife and avoid all tax arrears so long as you do it from the beginning of December otherwise she would be liable for tax for all of November.

thanks for the quick response. I was a bit worried about the legal side being stopped etc. Its not something i would normally try but i really cant afford it at the moment. so if i send off the log book today and i get stopped driving it tonight and its just been sold?

Just tax it for 3 months and pay the arrears for October.

You were driving it this month so you're only paying 1 month over the odds.

You could tax it online straight away and save yourself a lot of messing

I dont mind doing that system either. As i said at the start though i just didnt know if i could pay arrears and only pay till 31st dec. I taught maybe i needed to pay arrears first and then 3 months on top.

If you send it off today then your wife is liable for all of November when she goes to tax it so there's hardly much point in going to that bother for the sake of one month. You also have to consider the insurance implications. If you are not the registered owner then technically you cannot insure the car so in order to drive it you ideally need to get your wife to insure it and name you on the policy, again a lot of bother for the sake if saving a few quid.

Personally I'd just pay the arrears.

You can only pay for 3, 6 or 12 months You can't pay the arrears and then tax it for 3 months. If you tax it for 3 months, it'll expire at the end of December so in order to save you the other of having to organise tax over Christmas just tax it for 6 months.

You'd be taxing it now for 3 months from start of November, so tax till end of Jan.
1 month arrears in there too.

If you leave till start of December to tax you get till end of Feb but pay 2 months arrears.

If you're short on money do it this month.

thanks guys for the advice, ill pay the arrears rather than the hastle of changing ownership i think. But still im a little unclear on the arrears. The two posts above are both saying different things.
One way is pay 3 months expires 31st dec
second says pay 3 months but pay arrears of november and expires january 31st

Are both right and do i have the option of "
tax it for 3 months, it'll expire at the end of December" or must i pay arrears seperate.

    Sorry for any confusion

You pay a minimum of 3 months from Nov 1st plus whatever arrears there are for before Nov 1st.

Incorrect, if he taxes for 3 months he first pays arrears and the disc will expire 31st January, October doesn't count and is a separate payment added to the 3 months.

are the same apply to vans (commerical vehicle) as vehicle has being of the road since february 2013.

change of ownership best way to avoid back tax.

So annoying with the changes in DOE rules aswell

Well i taxed it today for 3 months and i had to pay the month of october as arrears first before they would tax the car. I got 3 months then and it then expires end of january.
    Thanks again
