How about Saturday week the 7th of December in Athlone?

    Thread needs poll !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,302 ✭✭✭Supergurrier

Athlone suits. Maybe a week later though ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,792 ✭✭✭Ded_Zebra

Couldn't really do a poll because it would basically be pick a town in Ireland and pick a date in December :p

Anywhere and any date suits me. Ashford would be best though :pac:

    The 14th?
Yeah that suits me better with work actually!

I only said Athlone as it is kindof central to everywhere.

Dun laoghaire perhaps? down by the old baths?

There are people who would argue Dublin for a meeting place here to their toenails and time and again not show up.

Reason athlone/portlaoise are being put forward is because its relatively fair to everyone.

Its very easy for members from Dublin/Kildare/Meath etc to arrange a mini meet on short notice. I am generally the only person who heads over from the whest but there are also a few midlanders and cork members who I am sure don't want the hassle of heading into the capital if possible at all.

    Just a thought

There is no way I believe it will ever be in Dublin, hence my :pac: I think Wicklow will be the closest people will get to Dublin. I still like Midway.

I'm not at all familiar with athlone at all (don't think I've ever been there) but If someone can put a google maps link to a suitable carpark ( free, access to coffee and food, easy to find) I'm happy to go on the 14th. Probably too dear to drive my own car down but I'll be there :)

    +1
I mean, I live in Dublin most of the week so Dublin would suit me better!
Just saying Athlone to have the biggest catchment area!

    What did i do?

It's a nice place where was suggested at first, with the dominos and so on, it's just outside the town and all too :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,302 ✭✭✭Supergurrier

Not being pushy just putting it out there as I am sure there are a few possible first time "meeting random people from the internet in a carpark" folks who might live outside the big shmoke.

Anyways I'm still a maybe date and loc dependant as I'm fairly skint for the next few weeks and will work w/e days I'm given

Any who I'm sure TT will show up shortly and whip ye into shape in regards to agreement on the finer points

Put up a google maps link to a free carpark with food places!

Noooo? I vaguely remember the place, spent a night in the hotel there, nice place, food and the like!

@toastedpickles - I'd say this is the place you're thinking of.

Thats the Kilmartin N6 Centre and it has a free carpark, petrol station with deli, Domino's, Subway, McDonald's and a hotel that does a good carvery.

Alternatively there's a retail park where there's an Applegreen station with a deli and there's also a chipper beside it (Luigi's or Mario's or something). The carpark (also free) is bigger but there's less stuff there.

Both places are right beside the motorway.

Which would be less busy on a Sunday? I think we should go to the less busy one because there is more room to park together and wonder around chatting.

ok, its an hour and a half drive, not too bad.

The retail park would be a bigger car park and also less busy on a Sunday so spacewise its probably a better bet.

Sure lets say the above one so!

Looks to be about 100 km from dublin.

The first ever meet was in roscrea, reason being most of the users were coming from munster or leinster. Athlone is a trek from cork/Limerick

Well sure that's only 125 km from Dublin either.

213km each way for someone going from Cork. I don't think people here like each other THAT much!

Comparing to Portlaoise (almost 200 km each way), Athlone's trip approx. 100km each way that's what I really like. :)

    31 nov/1 dec - O.K.

    7 dec - O.K.

    8 dec - @ work :(

    14/15 dec - @ work :(

    21/22 dec - O.K.

    28/29 dec - O.K.

Roscrea is not 213km from Cork! It is 148 according to Google maps, which is pretty similar to the distance from dublin @ 125 km

We use Midway for a reason. Its very accessible for people from Dublin,Munster and the midlands. Its got a biggish car park and a good selection of food.

Also because it is not in a housing estate there are few people and little chance of scumbags eyeing our cars.

Is there somewhere maybe a bit further we could go to help our southern friends?

Portlaoise is fine for me, but I'm coming from Limerick.Portlaoise is still a long enough distance for anyone from Cork to go.Athlone makes it a silly journey for them.

so now we need to a date and a list of peeps that think they can make it.

I don't mind Portlaoise as its a straight motorway stint, Athlone however is a 2 and a quarter hour drive each way and 420KM round trip.

I have attempted to book the 14th off already for Airsoft so I'll see what numbers there are for both.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,193 ✭✭✭Cleveland Hot Pocket

if it's the 14th then count me in!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,236 ✭✭✭Dr. Kenneth Noisewater

To be fair, Athlone would be ideal if there was an even geographical spread, e.g if there were people coming from Mayo/Sligo/Donegal/The North. I'm not sure where everybody is from but most seem to be south of a line drawn from Galway to Louth so in fairness Portlaoise seems fair. And thats coming from an Athlonian :P

Tbh I couldn't see how that car park would work. My dad is from athlone and all his family still live up there so I am in athlone several times a year and I've yet to drive into kilmartins car park/area and see more than a few parking spaces often you would struggle to get parking. So getting 30 spaces together or whatever won't happen not during a weekend during the day anyway. The other suggested location may work as was said it has a bigger car park.
