Looking for advice on teaching ad hoc lower ability - junior cycle classes in IT, websites etc.

I suppose that really depends on what you'd like them to learn.

In our place we usually start in getting the basics out of the way first, showing them how to manage MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and basic file management). gcflearnfree.org is quite good website but if your class are not particularly good at IT, it might be tricky for them.

From there we move onto Scratch which is a great design application and could be very handy for using as a short course in the new JC (don't mention the war!). It is free to download and allows the user to create their own games and animations. The NCTE are pushing it big time. It might sound daunting but it is very easy to learn and the class will like it. Now, I'm no Bill Gates but I learned a good working knowledge in no time(a month or so). You can find samples/tuition on scratch.ie and scratch.mit.edu. Many coder dojo's in Ireland use scratch and then move onto Python programming. The students like Scratch as they don't have to learn any code but can still do some designing.
I'm also doing Scratch with TY's and they've taken to it very much making games, etc. It's also very good for project work (sorry, mentioned the P word).
I hope this is of some use to you. Good luck!
