Company car usage

    Hi,

I've just started a new job , and have been given a company jeep, although my job is mostly office based, but out on site or meetings about 10% of the time.

I use the jeep to drive to work, which is great, and have a company fuel card.

I also will be paying about €60 / month out of my wages for the tax benefit for the jeep, or whatever. . . Don't know how the tax thing works.

My question is . . . Should I be allowed used this jeep for personal use? I don't want to ask, or upset anyone by using it at weekends and stuff if I shouldn't.

There's a tracker on it also.

    Thanks,

    Jo

You should have full use of it, after all this is the reason for the BIK tax.....use it like ur own car, see what they say

As regards the tracker, if its your vehicle to use privately it must have an off switch for when used on your own time, also your company must outline what reasons the tracker is on the vehicle, security=fine, tracking you and for disciplinary=not fine.

OP I think you'd better ask because using the company fuel card for personal use unless authorised could be a sackable offence...

Given that you're mostly office based, I'd guess it is either a perk of the job or they were stuck with it anyway.

Top up the fuel with your own money if not sure, anyhow... the company should have a policy with any restrictions in place for use of company cars, ask them for it.
Remember if they don't have a clear policy, you cannot be disciplined over anything with use of the car...
I my company we have use of the car after hours, weekends, holiday etc.
There is a reasonable private use of the car...what reasonable is... no one knows

Most places which allow private use outside of work will have a procedure for recording this use (particularly as the tracking needs to be switched off during this time). Sometimes it is as simple as noting the mileage used on work trips and the mileage for personal trips. As the previous poster says ask for a copy of the company policy on vehicle use. If there isn't one available (we'll ignore the whole question of how remiss this is of the company) then ask for written confirmation of any limits on your use of the vehicle.

is it a commercial or passenger jeep. the BIK looks very low to me particularly as you do very little business mileage. as regards the personal use this should be in the company policy but will also be on your insurance cert. it will state use for social domestic and personal use aswell as use in connection with your business. for the record im paying 148 per month and doing 70000 km per year. maybe im paying to much

One thing to be very careful of is the insurance and who is allowed to drive the car. At my firm my company's insurance covers my wife also. All "reasonable" personal use is covered, but check before bringing it on holidays :-)

Commericals are 5% BIK so id say thats it.

I think a lot of companies turna blind eye to reasonable personal use
