Hi everyone I'm writing this post as previous to getting my tonsils out I researched everything from the procedure to recovery. I'm an absolute wimp when it comes to hospital and blood, everything on review websites and friends told me I'd be in extream pain and there would be blood so I was petrified. I'm 21

I got them done in the hermatage as I wasn't waiting on public system, I built my immune system up a week previous with vitamin C and Zinc and protien bars to repair tissue post op, I was asleep for the procedure I informed the docs I felt sick after the last anaesthetic I had so they gave me anti sickness medication while I was still asleep. When I woke up I was in a heated bed as I was cold.

I could swallow and eat toast 2 hours after the op. I felt sick right after and was terrified of vomiting so nurse just gave me anti sickness med while I was berating to not vomit, Eating is so important, people told me It would feel like having tonsilits , it wasn't half as sore there was no pain atall for me, I kept drinkin water to get my blood pressure back up, the next day I ate a beef burger and veg, it gets uncomfortable at night just because of the swelling just stay on top of anti inflammatorys.

don't let anything you read from any published medical sites freak you out, im into my 2ed week and I'm back to my normal self around day 6-8 i had small pain on my left side just because I wasn't really eating so I just kept eating toast and the pain went away, basically keeping the scabs off as discussing as if sounds. The advice I give you eat ASAp after the op and don't listen to people telling you they hemraged and had worst pain of there life cause I freaked out, just make sure your diet is full of vits and minerals and protien , and keep on your pain killers youl sail through it x good luck

My experience was very similar. I was 28. Just a small word of warning. In the second week it does get incredibly sore. When the wound starts to heal up. that was when i wasn't able to week. The first week was breezy, just like a bad dose of tonsillitis. It is the recovery the week after that is tough. Saying that, all the pain i went through was so worth it. I haven't had a sore throat since and i had the op in 2008. PAIN WORTH IT!!!

After 22 years of regular sore throats my doctor put me forward for removal after a particularly bad infection.

I don't think I've had an infection since and that was about 17 years ago.

One thing I'll add to the above - be mindful that your throat can bleed quite heavily at any time within about 2 weeks of the operation.

I went to bed one night and my mouth started to fill with blood. Don't panic. This is fairly normal. Just grab a towel to spit the blood on and make your way to the hospital.

They use a liquid (that you gargle) to stop the bleeding. No big dramas but I'm mentioning it so if it happens you don't freak out.
