    Micra.

Though a reliable €1000 car will depend on the particular car rather than reputation of a particular model.

Unless you are a nun, don't get one of these.
Actually even if you are a nun don't get one.
They have the road presence of a 5 year olds tricycle and the same engine output as my electric shaver

It meets a lot of the OP, criteria though.

OP I have a mk4 Ford Fiesta, it's a 2000 1.25 petrol and cost about a grand with low mileage. Just check for rust especially on the rear wheel arches. It can be very economical on long runs and I have reached 50mpg on one occasion, not so great in the city though I hit 8.8 l/100km on my last fill. It's never skipped a beat in 10,000 miles though.

Here's my fuel economy if you're interested https://www.fuelly.com/driver/superhans/fiesta

I've a Mini Cooper S and my better half has a 1.0L K11 97 Micra. The Micra is a lovely car, great to chuck around corners and a fair bit of go for a 1.0l. Not good on the motorway but handles 100KPH roads just fine.

Reliable, easy to drive, easy to fix and quite comfortable. Great first car.

If your shaver had a thousand cc, there wouldn't be much of your face left after it :-)

Micra seems to be the best option.
