Best way to break in to IT industry?

I am currently working in finance with a specific finance background (Oracle apps, advanced excel etc.) but I want to move into IT and eventually a developer role.

However I know I will have to start at the bottom and that's fine with me. I am studying for an IT degree in the evenings. I don't have any real IT experience except for a job in an internet cafe about 11 years ago.

What would be the best way in? I've been looking at Application Support roles in the finance industry but most of them seem to require experience aswell...

The same as any role really, experience. You'd normally do this through an internship. Obviously this is going to be tough for you - perhaps a on weekend?

The other way is through contacts and by leveraging your current experience if you can.

If development is the path you want to go down, just apply for graduate trainee dev posts. It is useful to have programming experience that you can demonstrate or talk about in interview. This could be from coursework, websites for charities, spots clubs youre part of, whatever.

Be aware though that application support is an entirely different stream from development and in some companies it can be difficult to move from support into development. Application support can be a stepping stone into development but its not guaranteed. Also, some people find support more rewarding and interesting than development.
