Very Newbie PS3 Questions.....

Hi there, I'm thinking about getting a 2nd hand PS3 and am pretty new to all this. One of the main reasons is so I can play my downloaded movies on my HDTV (no USB connection on the TV). Can I plug a hard drive into the PS3 and play the movies from the Hard Drive? In which case I guess it is pretty pointless me paying extra for a PS3 with lots of Gb (I have a couple of Hard Drives with a TB each and can just leave one plugged in behind the telly). What do ye reckon? Also, can I download games directly onto the PS3 from the PS store (or other places)? Do they take up much space? Sorry, just thought of one more question - can I control the PS3 via remote control (or will the controller do this) and use this to control movie playback etc? All comments and thoughts appreciated. Maybe I should wait until NY when people offload their PS3s (but from the post on this forum looks like a lot of people slow to part ways with their old machines!). Many thanks, Gumby.

You could replace the hard drive in the ps3 with one of your own.yep you can download game s via psn i only ever downloaded one game from it which wad about 4gb.you can buy a remote for the ps3 looks like a tv remote but the controller does the same job.

Hope that helps you a bit some of the others on here will know more than me

You can plug in a hard drive via usb and watch most formats of movie files from it (.mkv being the main exception) It wont handle separate subtitle files though.

You can also stream from your PC via PS3 Media Server (free download) and it will play all formats and subtitles also.

If you have a Bravia TV you can use the Bravia sync functionality to control the PS3 via your TV remote. Works very well.

Thanks a million for the quick and helpful responses guys. And sorry for the atrocious formatting of my original message! Something funny happened there.

    Cheers,
    Gumby.

External hard drives have to be reformatted as FAT, don't they?

Also, when using an external hard drive, you'll need to create a folder on your HDD called "VIDEO." Otherwise it won't be able to find your movies.

Yep, this is the downside to the ps3 as a media player.
You can plug in a hard drive to the ps3, but it has to be formatted to fat32. The biggest filesize fat32 supports is 4gb. So if you have any HD movies bigger than 4gb, you can't play them.
Other than that, it's a great bit of kit as a media player, netflix on it works brilliantly, it's great at browsing through photos too.

FAT32 yeah, VIDEO folder no need it will browse the folders regardless of name.

Get a 1 year Playstation Plus sub. You won't regret it.
