I've been using Shimano AM 50's for about 4 years now. Not particularly light, or grippy (no studs for example), River Valley Swords is the only course I find really tricky with these. I use these for commuting as they are easy to walk in, I got them for 45 euro in CRC, they owe me nothing at this stage.
Only criticism is they are not the least bit waterproof, but it doesn't matter in a cross race.

Any half decent MTB shoes will work just fine, most should have allow you to attach studs at the top of the shoes for extra grip when running in mud also...
Main thing is you don't want a stiff sole like in road shoes as there is an element of running in CX racing...

Any of the specialised off road shoes are good.

You want a bit of flex alright.

Screw in studs are also nice to have.

The S-Works ones are very, very stiff - with SPDs they're better on road than mid-range carbon road shoes and pedals.

So get cheaper ones. Yay for cheaper.

I just got these ones myself there about 3/4 weeks ago, I've found them to be very good so far but have only been out in them about 4 times so far.
