How do you know if you were caught?

    Other than the fine.:P

    That's the punishment, not knowing.

Anyone know how long it takes for these fines to be issued?

I drove passed one a few days ago, I was doing about 103 km.

    I assume I was in a 100 km zone coz I was on a big-ish road.

What annoys me is when you see a sign for a "camera area" they don't also have a sign for the speed limit so it's hard to know what speed to go!

I doubt these speed vans have any tolerance so by being even 3 kms over the limit I'll be done?

I approached a speed van the other day and from the other direction was a sweeping blind bend. As I got near, a car coming around the bend not going particularly fast lost control. It appeared that he braked suddenly on the bend when he caught sight of the van. The back of the car stepped out and he came over into my lane to catch it. It was an old mondeo. He wasnt driving like a lunatic but marginally over the 80kph limit.
Looking at it now, the van is in a very dangerous place. It could easily have been a massive accident. I realise the driver is responsible at the end of the day but should those van be allowed in areas that can increase the possibility of an accident.

I would love to get a white transit and park it up at night, sit in the back behind the window and flash people with my camera.

Imagine all the freaked out people waiting for points :P

To answer the OP, I have seen them flash on a few occasions.

That's the danger of them being hidden. Most of the time people who are even within the limit will still jam of the brakes because they will always just be careful as to not be going too fast.

As I said above, when you can see the camera signs, there whould be speed limit signs beside them cos no1 knows what speed they're meant to be travelling at half the time, whether it's a 50/80/100 km zone!!

By the way, you were lucky the aul Mondeo didn't hit you.

If you where genuinely only doing 103kph, and it was a GoSafe Van, you will be Ok. Have no idea what the threshold is on a Garda Van though.

A few months ago I was driving the old N78 to Athy - there is usually 2 vans on that road - was going 60 in an 80 zone when the muppet in front of the muppet in front of me stopped! blind panic coz it saw the van! I indicated - road clear, cursing them both and overtook them just as i saw the van! Still doing less than 80 though - utterly plain stupid. However, same thing happened to my bro - and a cop car pulled him over and he explained it was the idiot in the car in front of him put his foot to the break hence the safest way was for him to overtake - the cops went after the first guy and gave him a ticket!

those 2 vans on the N78 don't flash and the majority of the ones I see don't - mind you they are usually blue or yellow - never white and completely UNMARKED! which goes against the regulations according to Conor Faughnan AA fame.

It takes about 10 days to be notified - and I just remembered its the cops ones I see that usually flash - vans (the one on the quays in Dublin near heuston station) and bikes (the ones i usually see on N7).

The one on the Quays in Dublin gets everyone - its a 50 zone coming out of the city but 30 going in - ALL the muppets usually go 30!

I was half way between the 100kph mark & the 105kph mark on my speedo. Hopefully, as people say, those speedometers in cars are inaccurate and I was actually doing under 100..

If I knew how long they take to issue fines/points I would be happy. At least then I'd know.

Not being high horsey here, but surely if he lost control of the car he was driving too fast? I've had to brake suddenly on corners. Not to avoid a ticket, but to avoid a crash. Never lost the back end.

I didn't even have time to slam on the brakes.. I never saw the van 'til I was passing it, he was well hidden beside a gate at the top of the road with a bit of an incline.

I didn't see any flash, the van was white I think. I didn't even know it was a speed van 'til I looked in my rear-view mirror and saw the big pic of a camera on its back door. The side of the van was blank as far as I recall..

I guess I'll know this time next week!!

I was driving to dublin 2 weeks ago and just outside limerick, I was in the driving lane of the N7 doing the 100kph speed limit, there was a car to my right just sitting there at about a hundred kph too, and a motorbike started to merge onto the dual carriageway.

He pulled up almost level to me and was running out of space to merge but I couldn't make room for him because of the muppet sitting in the overtaking lane, so I sped up a little to give him space to pull in behind me
He didn't merge, he drove on the hard shoulder speeding up, after a second I realised he was planning on overtaking me on the hard shoulder so I slowed down to let him through

Then I saw the 'go-safe' van in the distance aiming it's cameras straight at me.

I think I was only over the speed limit for a few seconds but It's such a pain in the ass not knowing whether there's a letter on it's way.
