Sounds like thermostat but first a few questions
    Is needle moving at all?
Is the fans blowing hot air?
    Is coolant level ok?

1 or 2 times while sitting in traffic it did go up in temperature, yes it does blow hot air , coolant level seems ok.

Most like the thermostat stuck in the open position.
It's not a big job to fix but you will need a new batch of coolant and drain the old coolant and recycle it.

    Are you handy?
