Sober with one type of drink?

Strange question but was thinking earlier..

If I had a bottle of wine, at say 13% alcohol, I'd be tipsy.
But I could drink 8 or 9 small bottles of Bulmers (4.5% a bottle) and still feel as sober as a judge.

Does anyone else find they remain sober drinking one type of drink but with another, they can be drunk very quickly?

It's the length of time it takes the alcohol to hit the receptors. You obviously drink the units of alcohol at different speeds. Prost!:D

Stay away from the wine, can have a "strange" effect :D
Can't drink it myself only a glass of red the odd time with steak.

I could drink a litre of vodka and not even know it. So...I've stopped drinking (vodka!) and recently on a night out had just two Cap Morgans and one beer and was floored! Result!

It's the ethanol in both that gets you drunk... Probably the pace at which you drink, and the soakage you've had before hand etc etc

I'm the same!. Mainly as I'd be unconcious, in the a&e getting me stomach pumped and my liver would be sliding down my legs... but then I'm a bit of a lightweight..

I'm the opposite. I'd be grand after a bottle of wine, but would most definitely be feeling the affects after 9 bottles.

I think you'll find OP that it's only your perception that changes :D
Bulmers has lots of sugar that helps counter (temporarily) the effects of the alcohol.
Same with Red Bull and vodka which I use to "sober up a bit" after too many Guinness..

I can drink tia maria or malibu all night with no effect but 3 pints of beer and am wasted.

For true comparison you have to drink them in the same time, same units of alcohol under similar bodily conditions, e.g. empty/full stomach.

Just multiply to get a comparable unit, (note I am not saying these are the units you hear quoted in ads etc)

    9x330mlx4.5=13365"units"
    750mlx13%=9750"units"

The stronger stuff will usually hit faster.

3 pints of 4.3% beer is 7327.2 "units". 1 malibu is only 35.5ml 21% so 745.5. So 9.82 Malibu's matches 3 beers. If you malibu is heavily mixed it might have less effect too.

Well, those 8 or 9 bottles will take a lot longer to drink, so while the overall alcohol consumed might be similar, the intake from the bottles is more speread out do your body is getting a chance to process it better.

The alcohol in beer is more diluted and you're processing it over a longer period rather than it hitting your body in a more concentrated dose.

Doh - post before mine said exactly the same thing. :)

Wine gets me absolutely off my tits. It's a beautiful sight.* So, when I hear people say they have a glass or two of wine every evening to unwind, my eyebrows do rise. That'd mean I'd be drunk, or at the very least tipsy, every night of the week!

    * Or so I like to tell myself :(

I can throw back a couple of bottles of white wine at a sitting, no bother. I can have 10 pints of Bulmers and feel fine. Put a Murphys or Guinness in front of me and I am locked after 5/6. Must be the sugar so I suppose.

I could have one glass of white wine and I'd be fuked yet I could drink a bottle of red wine and I'll be grand.

I can handle about 4-5 pints of lager before I start feeling the effects, but I can drink as much whiskey as I want.*

    *within reason
