My dad is getting his hip replaced next week so he'll be out of action for a few months.
He started playing golf about 3 years ago and is obsessed with it. I want to get him sonmmething for Xmas that could possibly help him during his recovery e.g something to help his short game
Has anyone been in a similar situation or know someone in a similar situation and if so...any ideas?

    my worst nightmare..

I would get him a putting return thingy, or you can spend over 100 and get a really good putting matt with ball return etc, like the one you will see in a good golf shop.

If he likes reading , you could get him some good golf books, likewise DVD's , I would not get instruction dvds or books though, that will mess with his head

Other than that, you could get a Garmin GPS watch for 119 in american golf, he can look forward to using it, they might be reduced further by the time he has recovered.

You have probably thought of this already but just incase, why not get him a chipping net or else a putting mat?
This way since he wont be able to stand or exercise for long periods he can do few mins with each....

Don't get him something to do with golf. Are you teasing the poor man;-)
He can be back playing in 2/3 months. My dad had the same thing done this year and at 72 was out again abet with a buggy playing like a demon. Just get him something to help break the bordem of sitting or lying down all day. A tablet or kindle.......

Maybe something he can look forward to on his return, like a 4-ball in a top course or something ?

I'm out for 4/6 months myself with injury and I think if anyone gives me a golf related Christmas present, I'll hit them with it !:)
Unless of course, its a SLDR driver !!:P

+1 on the chipping net and wee putting mat!
can stay competitive and invaluable short game practice.

My mother, who is a very keen golfer, had a hip replaced after a fall about 18 months ago and isn't back playing yet. That may be down to not getting her confidence back rather than being fit enough.

If you can help your dad recover quickly and get his confidence with the new hip, you'll be really helping him. Getting out walking, swimming and exercising under the supervision of a good physio are key to it. He should be careful not to get back too soon in case it sets him back.

I wish him a speedy recovery.
