Anyone who posts on boards about Facebook is probably a homicidal, cross dresser who can't stand the sight of baked beans.
    Again, it's a theory, I have no proof......yet

Wouldn't it be more along the lines of social conditioning?
People feeling compelled to share the everyday details of the ongoing story of their lives to the world to appear 'normal' within whatever scene they are a part of.
    OP, you'll probably like this.

I actually think that too. There are a few likely candidates on my FB. Wasn't there a study to support this?

I write something on Facebook everyday because I did a creative writing course once, and was told that I should try to write a couple of hundred words a day about anything whatsoever, simply to keep in the habit of writing. Facebook and the like are an easy outlet to do that.

You don't have a theory OP, you have a hypothesis.
If you had some evidence to back it up then a theory would try to explain why anyone who posts on Facebook everyday or near enough suffers from a mental illness, most likely depression.

Some people might try to substitute real human relations with Facebook and other social networks such as Twitter. This might distort their perceptions of reality. I've never used Facebook nor ever will so can't really comment on if it causes depression or not.

If I'm being honest, the only real purpose of Facebook IMHO is to act like a surveillance apparatus.

It's amazing how many people willingly provide their personal information to these sites and then complain about invasion of privacy...

Would you give all your personal information to a stranger on the street?
Nor would I, but that's why I don't use Facebook.

There are multiple definitions of the word Theory thanks to scientists who like weather forecasters are bluffers. ;)

Example of bad science: Stress causes Stomach Ulcers.

This was absolute fact for many decades which was later proven incorrect.

Lesson learned, don't always believe what scientists tell you. ;)

The word Hypothesis is synonymous with the word Theory.

    Are you a government minister?

    I doubt this is true.

However people who post & repost statuses about cancer, parents, kittens, their gods or other 'motivational' nonsense very probably do suffer from low IQ and poor self-worth.

    There! I've said it.

One day I will post something about a kitten with cancer who loved her parents and was chosen by CatGod to be ill, so that puppies would not have to feel pain.

Let's see what idiots 'LIKE' that!

I have a theory that anyone who visits facebook every day has indeed a sad life and needs to rethink their free time. Facebook got boring and crap a long long time ago. All the new tweeks are just delaying it's death a small bit.

One could rephrase the above as "My circle of friends have been boring and crap for a long long time".

Surely facebook is only as interesting as the people you have as friends on it? I use it as a social tool, using it to send messages instead of using text as I always have data and I also might not have the phone number of the person I need to contact, organising events such as gigs, house parties, dinner parties, reading articles, as a means of finding out about businesses etc

Just because you use it in your free time doesn't mean other people don't use it to manage their free time. I've a feeling that I socialise a fair bit more than you and experience a bit more living too so don't be throwing around that said life business.

Let me help you out with that one OP. There have been many studies done on the effects of social networking addiction on our mental health, but here's one of the most recent PEER REVIEWED (We all know how some people on Boards get a hard on for peer reviewed studies) carried out by the University of Michigan -

    http://www.plosone.org/article/info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0069841

    Abstract

Over 500 million people interact daily with Facebook. Yet, whether Facebook use influences subjective well-being over time is unknown. We addressed this issue using experience-sampling, the most reliable method for measuring in-vivo behavior and psychological experience. We text-messaged people five times per day for two-weeks to examine how Facebook use influences the two components of subjective well-being: how people feel moment-to-moment and how satisfied they are with their lives. Our results indicate that Facebook use predicts negative shifts on both of these variables over time. The more people used Facebook at one time point, the worse they felt the next time we text-messaged them; the more they used Facebook over two-weeks, the more their life satisfaction levels declined over time. Interacting with other people “directly” did not predict these negative outcomes. They were also not moderated by the size of people's Facebook networks, their perceived supportiveness, motivation for using Facebook, gender, loneliness, self-esteem, or depression. On the surface, Facebook provides an invaluable resource for fulfilling the basic human need for social connection. Rather than enhancing well-being, however, these findings suggest that Facebook may undermine it.

The bolded emphasis was my own. But I see from this thread people seem to be taking this issue personally. I haven't read every single study on this issue, but the general consensus among them is that social networking is not healthy for a person's mental health.

My own opinion? Social networking online is a fantastic tool when used properly. Unfortunately there are far too many bad carpenters that blame the tool because they don't know how to utilise it properly.
