Which 'Endurance Bike' Trek Domane or Scott CR1?

Looking for an endurance bike for long spins and sportives.
Comfort geometry, tall head tube etc, and a frame that absorbs some road buzz so you don't feel fatigued.
I've considered a lot of bikes, Giant Defy, Roubaix, Ridley Orion, Cube Agree and after a trip to Slane Cycles today I'm also considering a Bianchi 928 or Infinito.
Generally I have to say I'm strongly leaning towards either a Scott CR1 or a Trek Domane.
I rode both yesterday in Wheelworx and found the Domane to be a little bit 'squishy' due to the damping system.
I thought the CR1 was a bit more lively and nimble but I'm wondering if that will come at a cost? (not as comfortable over long distance)
The guys in Wheelworx were very helpful and were very positive about the Domane going so far to say I would never need to change it as it's the perfect blend of speed and comfort.
Online research would also suggest that its 'the one'.
I'd be interested to hear from anyone who has a Domane or CR1 and what they think of them?

For what's it worth I think the defy advanced is the business just think they have ruined it with terrible decals on top tube.

I'm a big believer in supporting LBS but this is also good value and supposed to be pretty comfy . http://www.wiggle.co.uk/felt-z4-ultegra-2013/

Probably frameset (4 series) only as I have Ultegra and Ksyriums I can use.

Was looking at the ultegra defy advanced but it's a bit out of reach at 2800 and as you say it's a bit meh to look at

I really like the idea of the Domane for non-racing use on crappy roads, but aside from the fact that it's heavy and a Trek I just can't shake the idea that any old frame + 28mm tyres would produce much the same effect.

Also, from the reviews it seems like all the squish is at the back (because front suspension would screw up the handling) so you still end up with vibration coming through your hands. If that's a problem use narrow/carbon bars and some gel tape (or the Specialized gel pads).

Many years ago I used a suspension seatpost and it seems like this is just a more refined version of this.

So I'd be interested to read a direct comparison between the Domane and any old frame + 28mm tyres (Conti 4000SII) + suspension seatpost + padded bar tape, but no magazine which values it's advertising revenue would conduct such a test.

The Bontrager bars on the Domane come with gel inserts I believe.
Just had a 5 min spin on both the Domane and the CR1 in the car park of Wheelworx yesterday.
From that brief spin I thought the CR1 was zippy and agile while the trek felt a little bit sluggish in comparison.
You could feel yourself rocking back and forward slightly on the Domane due to the damping system, felt a bit strange but maybe you'd get used to it.
Paintjob on the Trek was nice, Scott was a bit garish.

On that alone I'd 100% go with the CR1. If the Domane feels that sluggish in a car park, imagine what it'll be like climbing.

What about one of these. They get good reviews (supposed to be a bike that can be capable of both racing and long distance rides) and the 105 version can be got for €1800 in the Cyclesuperstore Tallaght.

    @Brian

Good point, I'm going back to Wheelworx later today to try both again.

@billyhead, (link not working) but I had a look at the caad 10 in the CSS as well as the SuperSix.
I think both look good and have great reviews but they're race orientated.
I was considering the Synapse but they've none at the moment, won't have any 'til the new year I think.
Having slept on it, I'm leaning more towards the CR1.
I think the Trek is comfortable but seemed sedate.
The CR1 was also comfortable but was livelier and more engaging.
(Not sure Cancellara would agree with me about the Trek though ;))

Some great prices up in Slane Cycles yesterday btw.
They have a few 2-3 yr old bikes they're looking to shift, all greatly reduced.
CR1, Addict, Ridley Orion, Bianchi 928, from £1300-£1500.

Da bontrager wheels are heavy enough though.i swapped them out for a lighter set.it made a difference.bikeradar done a review on da 4.3.look it up.if ur getting da frame only.you have da chance for lighter wheels/finishing kit ect.never on a cr1 to compare.good look with either choice.both seem to have decent review

Domain .. Thats what its built for...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,178 ✭✭✭✭billyhead

What domain bike i.e 4.3 etc were you thinking of getting OP and how much is it on sale for?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,091 ✭✭✭furiousox

    @billyhead
    It's the 11 spd Ultegra spec (4.6?) @ E2699.
I think its out of my price range anyway.

I made a return visit to Wheelworx and tried the Domaine & CR1 again.
It's difficult to make a reasoned decision on a bike by whizzing around a car park for 10 mins but at least there is a nice 'pave' effect outside Wheelworx ;)
Today just seemed to reinforce my initial impressions.
    The Trek was stable, refined.
The Cr1 seemed more agile and was twitchy at the front.
I like the Trek in white but it's not available as frameset only and the 4.6 is over my budget @ E2600
The CR1 is Sora equipped but I have an Ultegra 6700 groupset and Ksyrium SLs I can transfer to it.
It's half the price of the Trek @ E1300 and I can get a few quid back by selling the Sora bits.
Paintjob is a bit loud though, bright & glossy Scott colours.
Not going to rush my decision but it's about 80-20 in favour of the CR1 right now.

    I'll check them out cheers.

EDIT: Thanks for the heads-up, hadn't considered Felt for some unknown reason.
    Z5 looks really good.

You might be better off just buying a frameset if you have a groupset and wheels already.
What about a Dolan Tuono SL Frameset. I read somewhere that it's a sportive geometry and it's very light.

I have a Scott cr1 pro frame that I built up. Not much to compare it against but it is a lovely bike. Lot more comfortable than my other bike, (Eddie Merckx emx1)is a good bit lighter and in general just a lot nicer. Frame came from Westbrook cycles in the uk, used parcel motel in the north to get it delivered and worked out around 600 euro, worth keeping an eye on them to see if they put more of them up for sale.

Think the tuono is a racing geometry and its the hercules sl that's the sportive model. LBS got one in for me at one time to look at but it arrived with a damaged frame so I left it.

Slane Cycles have a CR1 frameset alright.
The Felt Z4 looks good, anyone have one?

Should rename this thread 'Felt Z5 or Scott CR1'

Thanks (shaka) for flagging the Z, hadn't been on my radar at all but the Z5 looks like a great buy.
Most of the 2013 versions seem to be sold out everywhere, new version out in the new year I think.
None for sale on ebay, adverts, donedeal or bikeradar either which I'll take as a good sign!
Has anyone got one, how are they to ride?

I don't think the Felt bikes are sold in Ireland anymore. You will have to look online if you want one.. The z5 new model anyway would be over €2000 aswell

Eurocycles still do them I think?

Anotehr one to throw in to the mix for consideration would be a Ridley Orion which is around the same price mark. Supposed to be both comfortable and fast. Have never ridden one but the feedback I have hear is very positive. I am considering one of these aswell as my next purchase. Bloody frustrating this new bike search. Jumping from a Cannondale Caad 10 to a Scott CR1 to a Ridley:D

Mr. Ox, for what it's worth, I have a pro CR1 from a few years back and I can say it is one of the most comfortable bikes I have ridden.. very fast and responsive when the hammer is down... extremely light too....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,091 ✭✭✭furiousox

Went for the Felt Z5 in the end.
It was close between it and the Scott, maybe the Scott will be my next purchase. ;)
It arrived today, here's how it looks straight out of the box.
Will add my own wheels and (maybe) saddle later.

    Where did you buy from?

I have an F5, I find it perfectly comfortable yet fast. Mine came with CXP22's which are made from granite and so they were changed immediately. I also changed the saddle as the Felt SL saddle is grossly uncomfortable (for me) it was far too soft and squishy and so was ditched after a short 10km spin.

I've also changed the seat post (to zero set back) handlebars, stem and cassette(105 12/25 to ultegra 11/28) The bike now fits me perfectly.

Couldn't find one anywhere so ended up getting one from here.

    http://www.badbikes-online.de/

I took the Aksiums off and put my Ksyrium SLs on.
It came with a prologo kappa saddle, I'll take it for a spin tomorrow and see how it goes (have my romin on standby)

Took it for a quick shakedown earlier.
It feels very good, agile, quick and comfortable. :)
I've taken the Aksiums off and put the SLs on (pic)
Saddle seems ok, need a longer spin to know for sure.
I'm also going to replace the white hoods with black.
Very happy so far, thanks again for the heads up shaka!

Just wondering about the long cage RD.
I took off the stock wheels with the 11-32 cassette and replaced them with my own which has a 12-27.
Do I need to replace the RD with a short/medium cage?
Also, all felt ok on the spin but do I need to take a link or two off the chain?
