With all the carry on with Hospital CEO salaries etc. I ask myself do the Government have any Independent Auditors - ones who would not be "bullied" by a Minister.

Don't they get in the big accountancy firms to do it? Costs a fortune.

There's the C&AG's office and they contract in auditors - but the audits are really just checking that money was spent properly and for the intended purpose.

They don't audit against government policy.

I think the easiest thing to do is to take the money they paid the CEOs out of their allocation next year and leave the respective boards to sort it out - see if they can be as clever in the public interest as they were in their CEO's interest.

The ones that prepared the books in advance of them being allowed into the Euro did a good job alright.

Yes there are, the internal auditors are the ones who uncovered this mess in the first place. The c&ag also does a good job by all accounts. We need more of it
