I am in a market to buy older car - 2006-2007 and contemplating the 3 brands in the title. Weird thing is that the higher class cars are priced nearly the same as the smaller class. So for example you would pay nearly same amount of money for Avensis/Corolla/Yaris of the same year, while the new car price is wildly different. I guess it has to do something with fuel economy, anyone correct me if I'm wrong.

Anywho, considering the above I'm really undecided between Mondeo, Mazda6 and Avensis. They all got great reviews on the net. Do not care about the looks, need a comfy car, reliable and fuel friendly :)

You looking at petrol or diesel? What sort of mileage do you do a year. Are you driving in town or rural, what sort of budget do you have.

If it's reliability you want, then stick to petrol. The Avensis will probably be the most fuel efficient, their 1.8 engine isn't bad. The 3 will be all comfortable, matter of preference really in terms of how you individually fit with the respective seats and seating position, so only a test drive will reveal that. In petrol guise, I'd put the Mazda top of the reliability list, but all 3 should be trouble free.
The Mazda is nicest to drive, the Ford a very close second (might be a little better at very bumpy surfaces), the Avensis is comfortable but a little uninvolving. Still competent enough, but keen drivers would miss what the other two offer in spades in terms of chassis dynamics and steering feel (the Ford would be best on wheel feedback).
I'd say drive all three. Which ever you find most suitable, buy that one. If you still can't decide, whichever you find first in the best condition with best history for keenest price is the one to get!
Just to note - most of the feedback on this site would be to slate the Avensis, but it's not as bad as they say. It's competent, like a ball-boy at a tennis final! But a little unnoticeable! But that doesn't mean the other two are Maria Sharapova's either!

I am not looking for anything in particular, just been reading a lot and find the 3 brands best in terms of value/reliability. I am asking for general advice, like which one to pick of the above, which fuel type should I go for, what to avoid, etc. Not much experience there. Oh, yes - and it will be rural comute to work/school, shopping etc. Very occasional motorway.

What a great post, thanks. You're right about Avensis, taxis definitelly know what they're doing. But so does Garda :)
