So I'm buying this old raleigh racer , most of the original parts are gone .

I want to take the frame and two or three other parts and use them as a base for a fixed gear , but unfortunately time has taken its toll and the parts including the frame are fairly rusty .

My aim is to respray the frame a white green color , Im just looking for some tips on getting rid of the paint and rust for the respraying , many thanks

    B.t.w , its a raleigh spirit , white in color :D

Nitromors and elbow grease. Or a frill with a scrubbing disk.

In all honesty, I did a BMX frame and d steel frame. You wanna lash on the nitromors. Leave it ages and then take at it with some tick wire wool. Then back on with the nitromors. Until maybe some sandpaper would remove what's left.

Don't use the drill like I suggested tbh. It's messy and time consuming ( you can walk away from the nitromors). Nitromors on walls and face.

Large grain sandpaper the whole thing after.

Dremel might be useful for hard to reach spots.

Wear glasses or goggles. Gloves too, but nitromors stops stinging as much when you get it on your hand often enough so if you're of low brain cell count like myself you'll be fine after the first two severe burnings.

Any hardware suppliers. Ask for a long weight too as this is useful for balancing the bike while you work on it.

I did a similar job with a sandpaper a wire brush and drillbrush, I took the frame back to bare metal, then 4/5 coats of primer followed by a 4/5 coats of tops coat (spraycans). It took ages, the result was ok. I didn't apply a clear PU coat to finish which I think would have protected the top coat better. If I were doing it all again I would get the frame dipped and professionally powder coated. There is a firm in the Tallaght area that a guy in my club used to respray/powder coat an old steel frame bike of his and the end result was really impressive. The cost was c. €100. You should check it out, unless you plan on spending the winter in the shed !

Im not sure what nitromors you've used but I've gotten a green one today in the local hardware shop absolutely minced it on and left it a long time and the paint will only scrape of on the forks leaving the steal frame on the forks only , and on the body its as if I haven't even applied it before not coming off at all and its original paint .

I've used it a bit before on wood. I found that if it bubbles it's ready to go. sometimes i found personally that if you leave it too long it dries out and kinda sticks again. also, nitromores changed their formulation a year or two ago and the really good stripper ingredient is now banned so it's less effective. maybe research perhaps buying that ingredient on its own.

Would they not be better off with a long stand?

Don't leave it on too long. Did you use wire wool on it anyway? If so apply it again. It'll take a lot of time to do it. Should be easier after the first application.

There is a spray can version too which works better, but the nozzle is poorly designed and clogs up after two or three sprays so it's almost pointless.

update : went up to the hardware store and bought a thing called strypit , going to lash that on and use wet and dry sandpaper and if that doesn't work well , all hope will be lost

I got an old frame sandblasted and powder coated by tallaght powder coating for €90. I got the forks done a different colour so it cost a bit more. You'll save yourself a lot of time and effort. Mind you my frame/forks were free so I could then justify spending money on painting it.

Thanks for the info , to be honest if i would have known about sand blasting and so on I would have got it done , inanyways the bike is raw at the moment and I'm trying my best to get paint away from underneath the bike .

Also does anyone know a cheap place in dublin to get a fixie wheel set about 70 -80 euro ?

Normally no logo wheelsets on eBay go for about €90. There's a good few cheapish wheelsets on eBay anyway.

Cheapest you'll get a set of wheels new in Dublin will be about €200 in On Track usually.

You're supposed to spray it in thin coats, by moving the can in strokes along the frame.

Sounds like you went gungho and just sprayed long bursts on the one spot.

Also not the time of year to be doing it. Make sure the bike is somewhere warm before you start spraying and keep it warm to get it to dry. Multiple thin layers. At this point just maybe get someone to sandblast and spray it for you.
