Hi, Im basically wondering does anyone have any information on any hospitals or labs who would take me to carry out the 9 months training for membership to the AMLS?
I graduated with a hons degree in microbiology from NUIG last year, im currently studying a postgraduate certificate in biomedical science in colraine to essentially top up my degree with the subjects from a biomed degree.
Ive inquired with university hospital in galway and been told because of cutbacks with the hse hospitals, public funded hospitals wont take me, its really starting to feel bleak!
    Any info would be great.
    Thanks

They won't pay you out of their budget. The money for students from irish courses gets assigned to the hospital seperate from their budget AFAIK. So if you insist on pay they won't be able to take you on.
From what I remember the requirements are for an accredited lab with the 5 core disciplines. It doesn't have to be a public lab or even a hospital lab.

hey dingle_berry thanks for reply :)
yeah i knew i wouldnt be paid for this..its just one of them things isnt it!
hmm thats good to know about it not having to be a hospital but as i want to specialise and i believe u havto in your training in one discipline, i was hoping it would be haematology and i think a hospital lab would be better. I just wonder would private labs take me on

Have you said it to the lab managers that you don't expect to be paid?
I'm not familiar with the Coleraine course or AMLS conversion thing, but are you sure that you spend the entire placement in one discipline? If that's the case are you sure that haematology is still a separate discipline and not considered as part of a "blood sciences" discipline?
There are plenty of private hospitals with blood science labs and the bigger private lab companies would have haematology departments doing similar work to hospital ones. You just have to ensure that the lab is accredited to ISO15189 or equivalent. Not just the blood transfusion lab, every lab you rotate through

Hi, I am currently studying microbiology and anatomy in NUIG. After this I wish to go on and take the CPD Diploma in DIT to do the 5/6 core biomedical modules.

Can you tell me anything about this? What are the modules like? Are you finding it tough to sort a placement for 9 months?

How long did it take you to complete the biomed modules?

    Thanks

    Ally

    Hi Allyk92

I'm currently in 3rd Year of Biomedical Science in DIT. I'm not sure what way the CPD Diploma works, but I'd recommend that if you were considering the course that you get some work experience / shadowing in a hospital Microbiology Department before making any decisions.

I just finished the hospital based placement and to be honest it's alot different to what I imagined and not all it's cracked up to be. Although some of our class are interested in working in hospital pathology, some of them could never see themselves ending up there are intend to pursue research, industry, teaching, other courses, etc.

I guess what I'm trying to say it that make sure your definitely interested in a working in hospital pathology before deciding on a particular career route, as apposed to doing an MSc, PhD, etc.

Sorry I can't be of any help with regard to the CPD ad-on, but if you've any questions about the course in general let me know.

I would email the contact person DIT has on their website with your questions about the course. She should be able to give you the module descriptions.

If the course is aimed at god requirements laid out in the AMLS pathways to membership document they will be the same as their undergraduate modules. Probably the exact same classes. It's the pathways to membership document that you need to complete, not any add from DIT or UU.

Finding placement will not be easy. Get the exact details of what is required before you approach lab managers. If any of your clinical microbiology or anatomy lecturers work as medical consultants ask them to visit their labs & to act as referees when you do apply.
