Problem with clutch

Yesterday when I was driving along I found when I went to change gear that the clutch was pressed in about halfway. In order to change the gear I pressed it in and the gear change was fine but the clutch would only return to a certain point. I parked the car up and it had to lift the clutch pedal with my hand back to its normal position. Then when I tried to put the car into gear it wouldn't engage and I couldn't move so I lifted my foot off the clutch and tried again and it worked fine.

I then drove the car home and it was fine. Then last night when changing gear, the clutch would work fine but the pedal would stop halfway and then pop the rest of the way back up.

It's a mk iv golf, could it be as simple as clutch fluid?
