Hello guys I'm new to this. I'm looking for a tow sling of around 10 tons capacity or would a tow chain be better ? All advice appreciated thanks.

I'd prefer a sling, any jerking with a chain is very hard on both vehicles, the sling has a bit of give.

I would agree but i did see an article at one stage where a man cut a chain in half and joined both halves to a car tire . the tire worked as a shock between the two halves of the chain eliminating the jerking

Jesus, thats some bodging. Who is to say what the breaking capacity of a tyre would be?

If you are buying a chain, there is a difference between a lifting and a towing chain. Personally I would go for a sling. It will be a bit bulky compare to the chain but less likely to snap. Inspect it before and after each use.

I've seen 25m trawlers towed with a tyre in between wire ropes, they are a lot stronger than you think.
Also don't discount a wire rope strop, I have seen 3 rope braided ones that allow a degree of give in them as opposed to straight wire or chain sling.
If you do have to snatch a vehicle out with a nylon type sling drape an old towel or similar over the midpoint, this will ensure if something does part the whole sling doesn't fire straight into the other vehicle.

Personally I'd go for a good nylon strop, these can be got relatively cheaply and if you need 10t then allow for a safe working load and multiply by 3 and get a 30t strop.

Also don't forget about the new fibres like Dyneema these are hugely strong and very thin they can be spliced easily as well.
