My friend is a plumber in his early 30's and started off as an plumbing apprentice, during the boom he gave up the studying and just worked on sites and doing his own jobs as a registered contractor.

He left Ireland once the crash hit and got a job overseas, he is returning to ireland shortly so will need to finish his qualifications so that he can register as an RGI for example.

The FAS site says that they will recognise trade experience, has any one any experience of going through this route, he finished out as a 3rd year apprentice and would like to finish off his qualification with impacting his earning ability too much
