LG IPS monitor settings

I got my 23" LG ips monitor yesterday. This one here.

It's a great monitor for the money I have to say apart from the obvious wobbly stand which is fine unless you are messing with the settings. The panel is top notch and it doesn't wobble when I'm using the pc as it's on a sturdy table.

I've been recommending the lg ips panels for a good while on here as have a lot of others but I noticed the out of the box settings were awful. I just wanted to post this up in case anyone else hasn't changed theirs.

My default colors were way off with heavy levels of green showing through whites and it was very blurry. Upping the sharpness fixed this to a certain extend but made the picture look off. You should never be using sharpness if possible.

I tried a custom profile but still couldn't get it looking right but I ended up using one of the presets which looks great.

If you go to the menu and then picture mode, change it to pc and then use the photo preset you should see a big improvement over the default setting. Color reproduction and white levels are way better.

Make sure energy saving mode is disabled and that Super+ resolution is off. From what I can see this only ups the sharpness levels. Changing the default setting to photo fixed the sharpness issue anyway.

Setting the response time to medium is supposed to be the way to go as well.

Anyone got any other tips for calibrating these monitors?

When I was looking at the link from Bloodbath my invisible hand extension found it slightly cheaper, just in case anyone is interested.

Im running its 22" sister model and a dell ST2210. TN vs IPS, totally unmatched. Couldnt get them close manually so Im planning on borrowing a spider and let it do the legwork.

Looking past few days to get one but its either out of stock everywhere or delivery is 5th December onwards. Amazon said it would be between the 18th December - 8th January. I believe Maplin in cork have 3 in stock but need to get a price

Ok I've had a bit more time with the monitor and something is already bugging the crap out of me about it. No matter how much I messed around with the settings it still didn't look right. There's a bittiness and graininess to the image.

Turns out it's the anti glare coating. Holy crap this stuff is awful. I heard it's supposed to be not as intrusive as the coating on the Dell ultrasharps. I can only imagine what they are like. Coming from a glossy screen I really notice the difference.

I think I'm going to have to remove it. Glare isn't an issue where the monitor is and I'd much sooner have a clearer brighter image.

Has anyone else done this before?

Did you ever fix the bittiness/graininess? Was it the coating?

I was messing with my settings on my LG screen and i noticed that the image was VERY grainy when the contrast was on a particular setting. Lowering it sorted it out for me.
You using DVD-D or a HDMI?

Nope it's still there. It's very noticeable on white backgrounds. I'm pretty sure it's the coating. There is a distinct pattern to it. My contrast and color settings are as good as I can get them. I've calibrated it as much as I could without a hardware calibrator.

I'm using hdmi at the moment. I can't find a dvi to dvi cable. Pretty sure I have one here somewhere but I moved recently and can't find it.

I could be wrong though. It basically looks like darker lines with whiter lines in between. It has that speckled effect you get from the coating as well.

It's almost certainly the coating. It's a known issue with some IPS panels. I'd never heard of it either until recently, when I was reading a review on that AOC monitor I showed you in the other thread. The reviewer mentioned that it had a lot less graininess in comparison to older iPS panels like the Dell Ultrasharp U2312HM.

The Dell ultrasharps are supposed to be even worse. This is actually my first ever lcd oddly enough. I was using a fat old crt and plasma before this that both had glass screens with no anti glare coating.

I find the ag coating more off putting than the odd bit of glare although it's unnoticeable in games. Another thing. How do you even clean these things?

-Update- I found a dvi-d to hdmi convertor cable I had there and tested it. The banding is gone so it was the hdmi cable. Just the speckled effect from the ag coating is left. It's still a lot lot better though.

See thats probably the problem, my brother has the dell ultrasharp and he hasn't complained of any graininess but it's his first monitor so I suppose he has no comparison like you did.

Cleaning it? Whats the issue there?

I updated the post since. I changed the cable and the banding is gone. I thought it was a pattern in the ag coating but it was obviously just a poor signal from the hdmi cable.

What do you use to clean it without streaking or damaging the ag coating?

Well in the year we've had it it's never gotten very dirty at all. Dry cloth for the odd time there's been something on the screen.

Well I put my hand on the screen when unpacking thinking there would be some sort of plastic cover on it like a bollox. It's fine for now but it's inevitable that it's going to get some smudge marks.

You seem to have some really weird coating on your screen, you can run a finger right across our screen and it doesn't leave any sort of mark.

It's fine. I gave it a wipe with a micro fibre cloth and it's clean.

Ive seen people remove it (wet paper towels method) but ive also seen people totally feck it up. If it really bothers you I would send it back if it's within the return window rather than risk damaging it. There are glossy 23" IPS available like the Acer H236HL.

Yeah I read that. I wouldn't risk it.

It's fine now to be honest. The banding caused by the hdmi cable was making it look a lot worse than it actually is. It looks great now.
