Internship affecting grant?

I've been getting the 3rd level grant since 2011 (I think the last year before they switched to SUSI?). However, this year I've been doing a paid internship in Dublin - earning about €5-6k gross over 4 months. Starting to think I'll end up being financially worse off for it though - Dublin rent /commuting is not cheap, and I'm afraid once I go back to college next semester I won't get my grant back. My parents are elderly and earn very little, living mostly off social welfare themselves and don't support me financially - I've been living off of my own savings+grant to get me through college, so I'm heavily reliant on grant money.

Does anyone know how I go about seeing how much my internship income is going to affect my college grant? I've gotten the grant every year so far without resubmitting forms stating income or anything like that, so I'm not sure if the VEC even have any way of knowing... I don't want to have to tell my employer they shouldn't pay me, but is that my only real choice?

Back in the 90s it was certainly no problem.
