I need to replace all four tyres on a 2001 BMW 316ci coupe, it currently uses 225 50ZR16 92W.

These seem really expensive and just wondering is there a cheaper option I could use ?

Look at mid-range brands below if you don't want to pay premium brand prices but I wouldn't go for cheaper brands than these:

    Hankook
    Kumho
    Uniroyal
    Firestone
    Fulda

The handbook states 205 50 but it has 225 50 on it, the 205s appear less pricey, but are they interchangeable and if so, what's the difference

Nothing you won't notice to be honest. Dropped to 195 from 215 before and I couldn't notice the difference to be honest, even when throwing them into the corner

Which also means that if it's supposed to have 205s on it as per the handbook, the speedometer isn't giving a true reading at the moment.

I'd go for 205/55 R16. They're very common and in general reasonably priced.

has the car got its original wheels on it before you go off and buy smaller tyres?

    Why go wider?

Yes, I'll have to have a closer look at the rims, they are the ones supplied on the car (I've known it from new as was in the family) it was imported directly from Germany, so maybe that's why it has different tyres to those specced in the handbook.
