It won't be the stickers that weigh it down, but yeah why do childrens bikes weigh more than ours?

Because people don't do their research.

Check out http://islabikes.com/ and also cuda bikes http://www.fitzcycles.ie/m/31/cuda

Also kids grow out of bikes fast so people don't spend much on them. So they get cheap steel bikes in stead of aluminium.

Buy a gender neutral bike and you'll be able to pass it on/sell it easier.

have researched islabikes alright, islabikes are very expensive, impossible to get a 2nd hand one. that's why i'm asking.

was initially looking at the Beinn 20 as it's for 5+ but it's got gears. the bike below it is Cnoc 16 which looks an ideal bike but it's suggested for 4+ & as you suggest beauf, there's no point spending to much as he'll be out of it quickly.
the other site looks good, while check them out.

    Hey JFH

Bought my 4 1/2 yr old a Puky bike online 3 weeks ago. No suspension or gears, a front v brake, decent 16' wheels with slick tyres and rear coaster brake. It's got a back carrier full cover mudguards and a stand and it's great. I got it on done deal but you can buy them new in Mike's bikes in DunLaoghaire- 180ish new. Having said that initially I was shocked at it's weight. However, once he managed the transaction from balance bike to this pedal bike (1 frustrating week), unlike most other kids bikes- it works. I have to head out with him now on my own bike. He managed 15kms with plenty of fun stops to and around Phoenix park last week. I was keen to get him an Isla bike and will in the future. However this German bike, though heavy really works well for him- he can manage it very well and he loves it.

Just a pointer, once they start cycling a proper pedal bike as above, it's real cycling. I can't keep up jogging. Fine in a safe park with plenty of space, but traffic, cycling on footpaths and attendant dangers are a bit of a nightmare. Just bought a towbar for his bike so I can get him some place safe to cycle. Another 100 yoyos.
